Like it hard? (MOST beds in Latin American countries are HARD as a rock [note – “orthopedic” usually means hard as a rock!!) We can remove the Topper!! One likes it hard and the other softer – we have Twin Memory Foam Toppers – whatever is best for your good night sleep, our intention is to accommodate it!!

Our home is a real "me casa - es su casa" kinda feel where you have complete access to our FULL Kitchen that includes everything from all sorts of kitchen toys, numerous juicers, a food dehydrator, ice cream maker, pop corn maker to a convection oven (you just get to clean up after yourself!!). SUITE 1 - $70*/n (reg. $90).
This suite is "SPACIOUS" (it's name and size!!) - Bedroom - 19 feet x 16 feet. Bathroom - 13' x 11'. Secluded Patio - 27' x 9'. It has cable tv (with MANY U.S./English channels from ABC, CBS, NBC, HGTV, Food Channel, CNN+++), cd boombox and a DVD player is available (for free when paying the FULL $90/n price - +$5/day or $20/week if discounted), BIG lockable closets. The Bathroom has a double sink, shower big enough for 2 and even a bidet!!! The secluded patio has a table & 2 chairs and we can bring in a chaise lounge if you'd like. There's a REALLY GOOD security gate so you can leave it open and get GREAT air flow!!
(discounted rate does NOT include the use of the bathtub [you can use the bathroom for an additional $10 the 1st FILL & $5 each addition FILL - if you're taking a long/hot bath]). This room is spacious enough to add an additional twin bed (if staying 5 nights), futon or cot (for fewer nights) - $15/per person.

ROOM 3 - $50*/n (reg. $65)
"INSPIRATION" - That's how guests describe this recently enhanced room with 2 windows looking out onto the sprawling gardens / grounds - bright, spacious, open, airy - a place that can REALLY INSPIRE you!! Can't you just see yourself waking up to this view? Or sitting at the table and chairs by the window writing your thoughts down? It's spacious (15 feet x 13 feet) room) and has 2 Twin beds that are typically pushed together and made into a King with a Memory foam mattress topper so you don't feel the separation and you bury yourself in the softness (or if one likes it harder & the other softer, we just take off one of the foam toppers for you). Whatever way YOU desire the bed, we'll do it for you! THIS & #1 ARE THE 2 FAVORITE BEDS where many people that normally don't sleep well or long tend to sleep REALLY WELL & LONG!!!! INSPIRATION has a Ceiling Fan, dimmer switch, nice size side tables & lamps, candle holder, lots of closet space (with lock [or bring your own really small lock if you feel the need]) & a pitcher of Water & 2 cups. There can sometimes be a little side street noise in this room (I haven't found many places in Latin countries that don't have much noise - whether it's the occasional neighborhood dog, rooster or car or piercing howler monkeys [not here!]) - mainly when you open the windows (to deal with this, we can provide you with free ear plugs [I'm hyper-sensitive to noise hence why I think of such features though few have been bothered by it] and a sleeping mask if you'd like to use one). This room is spacious enough to add an additional twin bed (if staying 5 nights), futon or cot (for fewer nights) - $15/per person.
This room shares a nice size Bathroom with a large shower for 2 and a bidet - with Awakening Room (& occasionally #6).

ROOM 4 - $40*/n (reg. $65)
"AWAKENING" is another spacious room (15' x 13') with VERY SPECIAL energy with it's purple and fuscha decor! Can you see yourself propped against the sturdy headboard surrounded by LOTS of pillows - looking out onto the lush gardens / grounds? Wouldn't you LOVE to wake up here? A great time to go within and re-AWAKEN your Spirit as peace and calm is emphasized in this room. You can have the bed made up as 2 Twin beds OR push them together and make them into a King and add a king size foam mattress topper. AWAKENING has: Small Table & 2 Chairs, nice size End Tables and Lamps, Dimmer Switch, Nightlight (ever woke up in a strange place, confused on where you were??), Candle Holder, Ceiling Fan, Large Locked Closet with lots of shelves (bring your own padlock or borrow one of ours). Inspiration shares a nice size BATHROOM with Awakening. This is a pretty quiet room but if the occasional neighborhood dog, rooster or car bother you, we can provide ear plugs (I'm hyper-sensitive to noise hence why I think of such features though few have been bothered by it) and/or a sleeping mask if you'd like to use one.
This room is spacious enough to add an additional twin bed (if staying 5 nights), futon or cot (for fewer nights) - $15/per person. (not available till Dec. 5)

ROOM 5 - $45*/n (using the shower in Suite 2 or shared bathroom as this one is on a separate hot water tank]) (reg. $65).
"SECLUSION" is away from it all (hidden off the Kitchen/Laundry Room area) hence VERY PRIVATE. This smaller (14' x 9') room now has 2 Twin Beds that can push together with a strap around it and a foam topper (so you don't feel the crease) to make into a King bed. SECLUSION also has a detached spacious PRIVATE BATHROOM with large walk-in shower for at least 2. SECLUSION is Handicap Friendly/good for someone with minor Mobility issues and includes a bar in the shower** and by the toilet. It also has a: Ceiling Fan, End Tables and Lamps, Candle Holders (quite a few hanging and wall ones), Small Table & 2 Chairs, Dimmer Switch, Locked Closet with Locks (bring your own padlock or borrow one of ours)(note there is a bit of a musty smell in this room [which most people soooo don't notice it])

ROOM 6 - $25*/n (reg. $40)
On a tight budget? The "PUENTE" is our cheapest! The 9.6' x 18.7' room has a Full Size Futon (it's one of the cotton REAL ones that is REALLY firm OR we have a 2" foam topper for it) and a ceiling fan, table & 2 chairs. It shares the tiny bathroom with shower. This room isn't totally private as whomever is sleeping in #2 "Cubby Hole" must walk through The Puente to get to that bedroom. Also, occasionally, whomever is receiving a massage in the back massage room needs to walk through (normally in the day) hence this room must be kept neat.

A Day in the Life of Vicki Skinner in Costa RIca : Sunday (Sept. 20) I met up with new buds Elena Ross, Diane Hunter & Iris for a spin at the FUNNEST THING in Sabana Park - riding a SEGWAY!!!!

First off, in the 5 years I've been coming to Costa Rica & living here - I'd NEVER actually gone INSIDE of Sabana Park!!

I'd seen SEGWAYs in Sarasota, FL & San Diego & had REALLY wanted to do them but in the States, they're often around $100 - out of my budget so when Chappell & her daughter Tammy gave us the opportunity to take a sample spin on the Segway I JUMPED on it in a heartbeat!!

I was AWESOME FUN for EVERYONE (over 8) on these eco-friendly electric scooters!!! & EASY!!! I was concerned since, as many of you know, I'm not to stable just walking - but it was a BREEZE!!!!

Sebastian was our Guide EXTRAORDINAIRE!! He spoke good English & was FUN!!!

It's the BEST (& laziest) way to see Sabana Park - Costa Rica's version of Central or Golden Gate Park that's had LOTS of improvements like a new Roller Skating Rink & the new Power Aide Jogging Trails plus all the other FUN in the park like Kite Flying, horseback riding, the mini-Zip Line/Canopy Tour (GREAT for someone unsure if they can handle it!!), the lake, LOTS of sports being played & picnicing & various other things happening (LOTS of concerts/events). In Feb. the Museo de Arte Costarricense should be re-opening!!

This is a TOTAL MUST CHECK OUT this TOTALLY FUN activity!! Get a group of friends/family together to do a Day in the Park!! (they have a picnic table right in front).

CHARITY - GRACIAS COSTA RICA - Gifting Back to the people of Costa Rica Group : EVERY DAY I bless the opportunity I have been given to live in Costa Rica! I feel as guests in this country either living here or visiting as a tourist, it’s REALLY IMPORTANT to show our gratitude by GIVING BACK in whatever way we can to the wonderful people & land of this AWESOME country!

There are MANY ways to do that:
Volunteering, giving financially or giving things that are needed or things that you no longer need/are using.

This belief has created the start of “Gracias Costa Rica” http://GraciasCostaRica.com – a sort of clearing house where people can at least give back on the material donation level.

Money raised from it will go into a sort of "Emergency Reserve" for when small needs come up from various charities (though "things" are needed the most). This is also a program working
[note, this is NOT a hand-out program. Groups that benefit from this MUST have in place programs where the recipients MUST do something to give back either to their own program, others or pay a small fee for items which is more empowering for the recipient]).

HOW IT WORKS:
My home in Escazu (conveniently located ON Calle Vieja near Calle Country Club) has become a Donation Drop-Off Point for many charities/groups around Costa Rica.

Depending on how YOU designate the, items will either be donated to various groups which we will give to people in their organization that somehow give SOMETHING be it a small payment, time or something (the intention is NOT to give handouts as that is VERY dis-empowering/enabling to people).

The nicer things will be available for sale to create an Emergency Reserve to help meet needs as they come up from for LOTS of different charities in Costa Rica.

Tour Guides/Drivers with Enjoying Costa Rica Tours can pick things up at hotels when they are in the area (designated hotels throughout the country coming in the future)

The nicer things are kept here (unless you desire them to go specifically towards an organization/cause) and set up at my place (with the dream one day of setting up an official Consignment Shop where someone donates the space and recipients and volunteers can run and sell to the public) where you/the public are invited to come see what we have for sale (by appointment only).

Every few months we do a Yard Sale. What is left over goes to various groups around Costa Rica (we work in conjunction with Enjoying Costa Rica Tours who delivers/picks up
they sell what they received to their people for nominal fees (200-colones, etc.) so they can feel good/empowered that they contributed somehow, or they do some sort of volunteer work to earn the items.

We then start over with collecting items.

(in time our intention is to create Drop-Off Points at various conveniently located hotels in key cities throughout Costa Rica to make it easier for you to get things to us)

On the North side of Calle Vieja (the Old Road). It is LITERALLY - DIRECTLY IN FRONT of CAFE TORINO (in Plaza del Rio) & the SMALL Plaza del Rio SIGN (also home to Cafe Te Con Te).

There are 3 columns of rocks with 2 entrances. One will be a locked gate (the parking lot for Embrujo Floresteria) & the other the entrance down a BAD dirt driveway onto the LUSH MAGICAL grounds/ Quinta where Vicki's House of Self Empowerment is.

Go STRAIGHT BACK 100 meters/300 feet to the split/fork in the driveway/grass & veer to the RIGHT - to the ORANGE HOUSE (aka Casa Naranja / Casa de Vicki which is what local taxi's know it as).

Cross over the broken bamboo bridge & park on the grass - with your nose facing forward, making as much room for other cars.

TAKING A BUS:
FROM SAN JOSE: Take the BLUE "Santa Ana-Calle Vieja" bus from inside the Coca-Cola Bus Terminal & get off at Calle Country Club. Walk back 75 meters, crossing over the little yellow bridge. There's an iron trash box & then our driveway.

COMING FROM SANTA ANA: Take the same bus to the Calle Country Club stop. Go straight 50 meters, cross over the little yellow bridge, then cross the street & I'm the FIRST driveway (on the NORTH side of the street).

NOTE: We're no longer allowed to put balloons out on the street (this is a hidden paradise where we have NO shut gate, NO guard - nada!! Where the neighbors feel safe with that but since more "things" are happenin' these days - for our safety, the owners are wanting to keep it that way hence the descretion so it's REALLY IMPORTANT that YOU stay REAL conscious to these directions!!

I'll put a BIG YELLOW BAG on top of the trash box (hopefully it will still be there).

BUT I SAW MAMMA MIA IN COSTA RICA. WHY SHOULD I COME OVER & WATCH THIS VERSION WITH YA'LL???
I first saw Mamma Mia it was in Ft. Lauderdale with the Sing-Along version that had the words at the bottom (like Karaoke)!!! It was SOOOOO MUCH FUN & most of the audience was playin', singin', & dancin' along!!! When I saw in in CR, it had the movies words at the bottom - in Spanish - so, like most of us, we didn't know the words to the songs (I was shocked at how MUCH I sang "la la la" to the words!!)

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS???
Since Katrina is coming over every other Monday now to do Metamorphic Technique (10am Mon. if ya want to join us), we may just start doing some sort of on-going FUN or empowering movie night on Monday nights!!

COST:
We're asking everyone that desires to bring some sort of movie JUNK FOOD to share with at least 10+ people & whatever you're drinking (this tends not to be an alcohol crowd [there may be kids here]). I'll provide water.

What is Reiki and How Does It Heal?

eiki (ray-key) is a multi-faceted spiritual energy that can be used to help us with meditation practices, spiritual growth, healing relationships, manifestation of goals, and activating the Divine healing power within all living beings. Reiki is a tool to help us develop “wellness consciousness” and also to understand, on an experiential level, what it truly means to be “One with all Creation”.

Reiki is usually considered to be a “hands-on healing technique”. This is one application, but it is so much more. Mikao Usui discovered this healing art in Japan in the late 1800s. The Japanese Kanji characters that represent the word Reiki can be translated to mean; Rei = Spiritually guided or wisdom of God and Ki = Life force energy.

As we know, everything in our Universe is energy. There are many forms of healing energy and Reiki is one of many healing rays. Reiki is unique in that it is truly guided by the Divine heart and the Divine mind. This energy is infinitely wise and knows precisely what we need to relax, release stress, and activate the healing power within.

All forms of healing whether traditional, complementary or alternative have an impact on the human subtle energy system. Each method also carries a unique vibrational frequency and consequently will create different effects. A beautiful characteristic of Reiki is that it has the ability to harmonize energies that may normally be incompatible and can create the best possible outcome. Therefore Reiki enhances anything we do.

Many people are practicing techniques to improve their health such as meditation, exercise and improved diet. As this is done, a deeper awareness often develops concerning the flow of subtle energies in and around the body and the connection between these subtle energies and one's health. This developing awareness validates the ancient idea that strong life force energy contributes to good health. Conversely a diminished supply of life force energy can contribute to illness. The existence of life force energy, and the necessity for it to flow freely in and around one's body to maintain health, has been studied and acknowledged by health care practitioners and scientists.

Our body is composed not only of physical elements such as muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, organs, glands, etc.; it also has a subtle energy system through which life force energy flows. This subtle energy system is composed of energy 'bodies' which surround our physical body and assist us in processing our thoughts and emotions.

The energy bodies have energy centers called chakras, which work somewhat like valves that allow life force to circulate through the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. We also have energy meridians and nadas. These are like rivers, or streams, which carry our life force energy throughout our physical body, to nourish us and assist in balancing our body’s systems and functions.

Our physical body is alive because of the 'life force energy' that is flowing though it. If our life force is low or blocked, we are more likely to become ill, but if it is high and free flowing, we more easily maintain health and a feeling of well-being. One thing that disrupts and weakens the flow of life force energy is stress. Stress is often caused by conflicting thoughts and feelings that get lodged in one's subtle energy system. These include fear, worry, doubt, anger, anxiety, etc. Medical research has determined that continual stress can block the body's natural ability to repair, regenerate and protect itself.

The American Institute of Stress estimates that 75%-95% of all visits to doctors are the results of reaction to stress. The effects of unreleased stress range from minor aches to major health concerns, such as heart disease, digestive disorders, respiratory and skin problems.

Stress can also activate our fears and cause our life force energy to diminish. When this happens we weaken our ability to respond to fear appropriately and to transform it.

Reiki is a technique that aids the body in releasing stress and tension by creating deep relaxation. Because of this, Reiki promotes healing and health.

The Reiki system is comprised of techniques for transmitting this subtle energy to yourself and others through the hands, eyes or chakras into the human subtle energy system. Vicki Skinner's Childhood Home - an Eichler Home in Orange, Calif. (the Fairhaven Tract) used in the lates "Meet the Volkswagen Family" commercials!!! : This is the COOL house I (Vicki Skinner & my brothers Michael, Billy & JB) grew up in - an Eichler Home in Orange, California - the Fairhaven Tract. They are TOTALLY "BITCHEN" homes!!

Ours was 3/4 glass, U-shaped with a big atrium in the middle of it!! In the middle, it was like one long open room divided by sections - living room, dining room & family room (like a loft in a way). It was REALLY BRIGHT (with floor to ceiling windows!!) & the heating/air conditioning vents were under the floors so your feet were always warm!!

I think my mom bought the house back in '63 for around $37,000. At the time we sold it upon her death in '04, it was one of the highest sold Eichler homes BECAUSE it was in mint/original condition & a hot property at the time & was again when we sold it for $675,000!! (I LOVE the guy that bought it because he [like MANY that LOVE Eichler's] has such respect for the energy & importance of our family home!! Which is why it was VERY important for me for him to get it!!).

HERE'S THE FINAL STORY OF VW USING MY MOM'S OLD FAIRHAVEN EICHLER (though on Oakwood) HOME FOR A COMMERCIAL 4/09:

This is a story of the filming the Volkswagen TV commercial in front of our house. I have sent most of this by e-mail to you. This is just dragging it all together in one place.

This is the story line of "Max the Talking VW" as Bruce understands it:

The house next door to ours (the Skinner's old house) has been bought by a 1968 Volkswagen Bug. My understanding is that he has a wife (a 1968 Volkswagen Bus) and four children (2009 or 2010 Volkswagen cars). He wanted a house where all of his children could have their own garage. He liked the Eichler houses but could not find any with four garages. Therefore, he bought the house next door to us and had it remodeled to fit his family’s needs.

On Wednesday April 15, 2009 a crew of about 20 people showed up and started building a façade in front of the house.

By Wednesday or Thursday evening the modification was well under way,

By Friday evening the transformation was complete.

You will note that the front door is the center where the car port was. The extra wide garage door is now the front door. A family of Volkswagens has no need for a small 3 foot wide door.

Bright and early (7AM) Saturday morning a crew of about 60 people showed up on our door steps (we don’t actually have any door steps) and shooting of the commercials started.

The actual shooting of the ad started on Saturday and continued through the next Wednesday.

On Thursday a crew came in and took still pictures.

Friday the facade was in the trash and the painters started repainting the whole house.
Monday the painters were finished.
Tuesday a crew rotor tilled the front yard.
Wednesday the yard was all in.

The house was restored on Wednesday 4/29/09 with new paint and new yard.

On Sunday morning they had an SUV with a long boom and camera on the front. One of the cars was racing down the street going backwards about as fast as it could go in reverse. About 20 feet in front of the car was this SUV going the same speed in reverse taking pictures. This camera had a transmitter on the video output so the director could see what the camera saw without actually riding in the SUV. Good driving!!!

One thing I saw that I thought was particularly funny. One day they were shooting a scene where a car was driven away from the house and down the street. I noted that after the car was driven into the street, the driver got out of the car, another driver got in and backed the car back into the driveway. This happened several times. How is that for specialization?

It was all very exciting and rewarding. Bruce wrote "They paid us $1,000 a day for the use of our driveway and front yard. I’m not sure how they count days. I think they intended to use our driveway and yard for only two days, they paid us $2,000. They used our driveway for only one day and used the side yard almost every day they were shooting. Both of our cars were out of our garage and I allow them to store their equipment there at night. In the end they brought us an additional check for $1,000. This was the easiest money I ever made. I told them I had enough fun that they didn’t need to pay us anything.

COOL BAMBOO BIRD FEEDER : This is a REALLY COOL Bird Feeder one of my workers created with just some pieces of bamboo & some rope!!

I originally had this created for this one BEAUTIFUL BoBo/MotMot bird who, if he's not there when I come out in the morning, I just call him "Mr. BoBo - Banana's" (or whatever) & literally, within 5 minutes, 98% of the time not only does he come but about 10-15 other birds do as do 1-5 squirrels who eat the Sunflower/Girasol seeds I give them (before finding the sunflower seeds [I get them the cheapest at the big market in Piedades de Santa Ana & a bit more at Saretto's] I was in constant battle with the squirrels [aka "Bandito's"] over them eating whatever I was putting out for the birds!!).

THINGS TO HAVE TO HELP BE A BIT MORE PREPARED FOR FUTURE EARTHQUAKES IN COSTA RICA

DARE TO BE PREPARED!!!

This blurb is a compilation of info I’ve pieced together from LOTS of resources, as well as my observations/experiences growing up in California & experiencing LOTS of earthquakes of varying magnitudes!! I’m a BIG believer that having information helps us be more EMPOWERMENT so WHEN something happens (& it WILL living in Costa Rica!!), we can hopefully react more consciously hence handle everything better & be able to help others more!! This document is NOT the gospel & I’m NOT a professional (though I’m waiting for a friend’s response to it that’s out there on the line as a Emergency Response Expert).

I used to keep a “Bag” filled with the items listed below. It was a duffel bag on wheels so it’s easy to grab & drag out. Now I keep most of the things in 2 places but writing this I’m thinking it might be smart to go back to that bag again - just in case. A Backpack is good if you want to put the ultra basics in.

One “hit” I got after one of my friends was given 20 min. to run into her home that was destroyed in the last big San Francisco earthquake was to have one small bag that if you HAD to run for your life - what would be the MOST IMPORTANT things you’d want to take like documents, photos, jewels, special keepsakes.

Another “hit” I JUST got was to batten down the hatches some more so I had my friend looped extra wire tied a few times around screws - securing mirrors, clocks & wall art.

Assume if a major earthquake/disaster happens that most everything will be closed down at least for a few days &/or power has resumed &/or supplies will be limited/non-existent - banks, stores, gas stations, public transportation (to say nothing of restaurants!), hence the importance of being as prepared as possible. PLAN AHEAD!!!

I also have my entertainment center bolted to the wall with “L Brackets” & I put rubbery meshy shelf liner under things so they don’t slide off shelves, etc. (I only lost 2 glasses - neither I had this under & a big heavy expensive vase was just fine that was next to it).

I keep a whole set of clothes at the front of the house along with shoes & a jacket – just in case (after a big one, I’ve been known to sleep with my clothes on – just in case I need to run!!).

ELECTRICITY GOING OUT - I had one of the guys with the power company share an IMPORTANT HINT with me to help prevent potential problems – in the case of a power failure, you might want to shut off all your power switches from the main box but say one or two key ones as he said there IS the POTENTIAL of frying your electrical system via a power surge when the power comes back on (evidently this seems to be especially prevalent when they turned your electricity like they like to do if you’re a couple days late from paying your bill in Costa Rica!!).

In times after a large earthquake & knowing more strong aftershocks can happen (or when I know we’re going to have a scheduled power outage) I turn my fridge & freezer up to 8-9 so things will last longer.

Put Latches on Cabinet Doors (especially where you have breakables – saves you cleanup/work time!]) – even if only a Friction Catch - http://worksafetech.com/pages/Cabinet_Latches.html

We’ve been taught to stand in a doorway but I find that MANY doorways in Costa Rica are WOOD framed. NOT enough to support much of anything hence having SERIOUS potential to kill you!!

Get to know & CARE about your neighbors!! You may just need each other in case of an emergency!! You can share tools, help each other, share food, have a party (that’s what we did in the San Francisco earthquake – since we had no electricity in the whole area & it didn’t seem like it was going to come on any time soon, all the neighbors brought their food out of the fridge, alcohol & we feasted & partied all night (some of us [ok – me!!] figuring if something worse happened, we’d feel it less if we were drunk!!). Being new in the complex, I hadn’t known many of my neighbors, which I got to know FAST!!! This is ESPECIALLY important for people that are single &/or have any health issues/special needs.

With your family/housemates, have an “escape route” (as you would in case of a fire).

In areas with serious damage – put out a white flag out after the quake if everyone and everything is OK.

THINGS I FEEL ARE IMPORTANT TO HAVE TO BE AS PREPARED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE STRIKES AGAIN (& you KNOW it WILL living in Costa Rica):

7 STEPS TO EARTHQUAKE SAFETY
STEP #1: Identify potential hazards in your home and begin to fix them.
STEP #2: Create a disaster-preparedness plan.
STEP #3: Prepare disaster supplies kits.
STEP #4: Identify your building's potential weaknesses and begin to fix them.
STEP #5: Protect yourself during earthquake shaking- drop, cover, and hold on.
STEP #6: After the earthquake, check for injuries and damage.
STEP #7: When safe, continue to follow your disaster-preparedness plan.

THINGS TO HAVE IN YOUR HOUSE BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE STRIKES
BAGS: Heavy-duty BIG plastic bags for waste disposal (or as a rain poncho).

BATTERIES: LOTS of extras in various sizes (check or better yet, change them at least once or twice a year). Personally, though I normally use them, in this case, I would NOT relying on re-chargeables since they tend to not last as long & you may not have electricity to re-charge them.

BLANKETS: If you’re in an area that sometimes get colder – you might want to have some Solar Blankets.

BLEACH: To add to the water if needed.

BOOTS / STURDY SHOES:

BUCKET - BIG WITH a Lid (to go to the bathroom in [especially helpful if it’s outside & you can dump it in a pile of dirt] unless you have plenty of stored water to flush it down [this is a good time to enact the “When it is yellow, be mellow. BUTANE LIGHTER: (for lighting candles. Do NOT use matches as they get soggy with humidity)

CANDLES - TEA: Tea candles are best as they do NOT drip & last 3-4 hours on average. You can get a bag of 100 at PriceSmart for around 3,000. The markets have small boxes of them.

CAR: Extra tire, jumper cables, taper thing to break the window, fuses, inspection lights, Flat Tire Fixer, tow ropes, traffic cones, reflecting triangles.

CASH: Have enough small bills to last you at least 4+ days – especially if the power is off & atm machines aren’t working. Credit card processing may NOT be possible/working if the power is down.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

FIRST AID KIT: LOTS of band-aids, Antibiotic Ointment, Pain stopper, Asprin/asprin-type product (peppermint or eucalyptus oil is the natural way I handle headaches), Gauze Pads, burn dressings, burn spray, hydrogen peroxide, ice packs, SPF wipes, antimicrobial wipes.

FOOD: Have PLENTY of canned food (ideally with the pop tops – otherwise make sure to have a MECHANICAL/ manual can opener), things with a long shelf life to last at least 4-7 days. “Rations” - http://bepreparedsupply.com/page/771201 http://EarthquakeSolutions.com/id21.html Even better – HEALTHIER FOODS like Protein Bars, dehydrated fruits. Heck, through in some TREATS for you!! (in the BIG San Francisco earthquake, all I wanted on my way home from work was a bottle of Chivas Regal! Though I RARELY drink, my take was IF something worse came down, I didn’t want to feel it & I was splurging/going out in style!!!
GAS MASK: (especially for a volcanic eruption)

GENERATOR:

GLOVES: LEATHER / WORK GLOVES (HEAVY DUTY - the heavier the better for removing debris)

KITCHEN THINGS:
MISC. - Knife (larger), Bottle Opener, CAN OPENER (non-electric/manual -you can’t open the canned foods without it [especially useful if it is multi-function]. ESPECIALLY important to have cans with flip top!!!!)
DISPOSABLE SERVING THINGS - You’re not going to want to do dishes (that is IF you have water) so have a BUNCH of Paper Plates, Disposable Flatware & Disposable Cups.

LADDER – Especially an EMERGENCY ESCAPE LADDER or at least some heavy duty rope knotted to shimmy down if you have 2+ stories.

LIGHTS (see candles [MOST crucial!!!]):
FLASHLIGHTS - I normally keep one by the front door, one in my night stand, one in my desk at least. I also have a BIG industrial strength one. NOTE: I keep the batteries in a baggie taped to the item so they don’t wear down.

PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS: toilet paper, hand sanitizer, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, wet naps/baby wipes (REALLY GOOD for cleaning yourself up!!), tissue, razors, combs, port-a-potties, toilet chemicals, showers, privacy tarps.

PETS: If you have any pets – remember to have at least a few days of food for them also.

PHONE: The OLD FASHIONED TRIM LINE phones are the best as they do NOT require plugging into an electrical/power outlet.

SMALL TV - BATTERY OPERATED: Better yet - an AC/DC TV/AM/FM Radio combo I find best (make sure you have LOTS of batteries for this as it takes a LOT & they tend to be D’s which aren’t always easy to find in CR).

STOVE: Little camping BUTANE CAMP STOVE or single burner & CANS OF BUTANE &/or a GAS OR REGULAR BARBEQUE to cook on outdoors

SWISS ARMY KNIFE:

TAPE: Especially SILVER DUCT TAPE or MASKING TAPE (to help keep whatever unbroken window glass in temporarily as well as to keep as much stuff from coming in [so you don’t have to clean up as much!])

TENT: EPA & HiperMas have CHEAP pup tents

TOILET PAPER: Quite a few rolls

TOOLS: Wrench (adjustable, crescent & pipe wrenches to turn off gas and water supplies. MOST important – a On Duty Gas Shut-Off Wrench [CRUCIAL if you have gas to prevent explosion] Make sure you’ve tried this BEFORE so you KNOW what you’re doing. EVERY family member should know how to turn off the water, hot water tanks, gas, master switch on the electricity+!! - http://americanfamilysafety.com/kits/gas-water-shut-off-tool, Screw Drivers (ideally a multi-head one), Hammers, Nails (all sizes), PryBar, Shovels, Bolt Cutters, Axes, Saws, Safety Goggles, ROPE, mirrors, pliers, crow bars, dust masks, duct tape, hard hats, safety goggles, knives!!!

TOWELS: For yourself & rags to clean

TURN OFF YOUR MASTER ELECTRICAL SWITCH (when the power goes back on again - it could be such a surge that it could fry your outlets & what’s connected to them).

TWEEZERS: To get glass out

VOICEMAIL ON YOUR HOME PHONE (as well as cell of course): I think chances are better of electricity being off (hence a personal answering machine not working) vs. the ICE voicemail system going down. Create a plan with select people that Goddess forbid, if you cell dies, someone else has your code to get into your voicemail & can leave a message saying you’re ok or where they can reach you otherwise. ESPECIALLY have someone NOT in your area. Also, have someone out of your area that can call your friends/people concerned to let them know you’re ok (which means giving them a list of all emails/phone #s).

WALKIE TALKIES

WATER - PURIFIED/DRINKING: I ALWAYS have at LEAST one 5-gallon bottle of purified water (ideally a bunch of individual water bottles for each person which would mean a siphon to pour it into). A DRINKING WATER PUMP is smart (if you have it up on a stand, aftershocks may knock it over. You can find these at the market where you find the 5-gallon bottles).

I also have a 5-gallon bottle filled with tap water that I put under the cupboards in each bathroom for when the water goes out (& you KNOW it does in Costa Rica).
Water for each family member for at least one to two weeks (allow at least 1 gallon per person per day to cover for drinking, cleaning & cooking) and purification tablets or chlorine bleach to purify drinking water from other sources.

PRESERVING WATER - Pure or distilled water doesn't need to be preserved. It will stay fresh literally forever. It will take on the taste of the container it's in and it looses it's dissolved oxygen. Water from the tap is pure enough to last indefinitely. You get into trouble if there's some kind of food for bacteria in the water. The loss of the oxygen makes it taste flat. When you decide to drink it just pour it back and forth between a couple of containers and it will taste OK. Chlorine is use to purify water. Four or five drops of house hold bleach in a gallon will kill most anything of an organic nature in the water after you let it set a while. The chlorine is used up in oxidizing the impurities so the amount is determined by just how much stuff is in the water. If there's too much chlorine in it you will taste it and you can again pour it between a couple of containers to let the excess escape before you drink it. This is good in an extreme emergency. Of course you settle out the mud first. Things like oil and hydrocarbons ruin the whole process.

WHISTLE: Smart idea!! - oOne for each person in the house that they keep in their bedroom plus a few in this kit. This could be a lifesaver!

WIPES: I have a big can of these - one for personal care (like Baby Wipes. Good in place of showers. These are QUITE expensive in CR but Pequeño Mundo has them in their Kids area for quite cheap!!) & one Antiseptic like for the Kitchen (PriceSmart carries 3 of the big cans for around $20 [to me WELL worth the investment!!])

WOMEN – PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS (like sanitary napkins, etc. if you’re still in that way!)

MISC: Depending on where you live you might want to have Insect Repellant, Sunscreen, Rain Ponchos, Jacket.

Guests were asked to bring a Dessert to share (Gail Nystom seldom indulges in treats hence the theme!! THANX to Unity minister Juan Enrique Toro & Big Mike for bringing cakes [I ESPECIALLY LOVED to chocolate ice cream cake Juan Enrique brought - YUMMMM!!!!!]), whatever non-alcoholic thing they were drinking (we provided ice tea & water), any Beatles music they had (Gail LOVES The Beatles & THANX to Feng Shui Master John Laurent, we had a bunch of songs) & a desire to have FUN!!!

For me the most special moment was when we all joined hands,dimmed the lights & all sang Gail Nystom's favorite song - John Lennon's "Imagine"!! I was filled with "God Bumps" (it ain't got nothin' to do with "geese" when I get that feelin!!! To me it's the Universe sayin' "Vicki - ya GOT IT!!!" ) - ELECTRIFYING!!!

VILLA VERDE - POZOS DE SANTA ANA : Before moving to Costa Rica, I searched for 2 trips/WEEKS seeing MANY homes & compounds but nothing really "felt right" - UNTIL I found the compound pictured below!!!

It was BY FAR the BEST compound/community I found after searching for a couple of weeks - especially for "security", GREAT feel, connection with nature & BY FAR - the BEST for FAMILIES as many kids roam freely/safely here!!

It's a MAGICAL space (the only reason I moved from it was because I wanted to do a Guesthouse/retreat property/workshop space like I'm doing now - http://FountiansGuesthouse.com / http://HouseOfSelfEmpowerment.com).

It's surrounded by a large metal wall throughout & a SOLID guards gate that checks EVERY visitor! They have 19 homes - 4 of them lived in from the family that owns the quinta & have a LARGE pool (though not heated so it's COLD!!), basketball court, rancho, BEAUTIFUL grounds. Most of the homes do NOT have bars in front (just in the back).

I don't believe they accept pets any more. The homes don't have their owned private fenced in area though most I've seen have a little back patio or little courtyard type area.

I really liked living in Pozos de Santa Ana in this area as it was still like an old Tico town (I felt safe doing my daily walks). Daily I could hear at least a horse or two galloping by (my home with the one closest to the road) yet just around the corner is the heart of the newest gringo area - the road that leads between Santa Ana & Belen heading towards the airport so you have SOOOOO MANY restaurants, shops, Forum 2 [Forum 1 is just off the Pista/highway]+++ nearby (but you don't feel it!!). You also have buses in the area.

Currently my old home is for rent!!

This is the "A-Framed" UNfurnished, 3-bedroom, plus HUGE upstairs LOFT (GREAT for a family/play room &/or office or take it all over for a 4th bedroom. It also has a full bathroom), 3 bathroom (showers only), detached home I lived in (pictured below from when I lived there). It has a VERY open feeling with LOTS of windows (no bars on the front windows)!! I even liked doing dishes here as it had a BEAUTIFUL tropical plants/trees view out the window (see picture ____ This is SOOOOO RARE as I'm SOOO NON-Domestic Goddess!!)!!! I LOVED living in it!!!!

That same year, with immense joy, they received Acharya Sri Ananada Giri in Buenos Aires, which was on his first trip to the West.

From then on, Gabriela has traveled to India 15 times where she has participated in more than 10 seminars offered by Oneness University and conducted by her Guides and Sri Anananda Giri. She has also been in teaching sessions with Sri Bhagaván himself during her guide training.

During 2000 Gabriela started to conduct programs for the Oneness University and she became a Diksha Facilitator in 2004. She opened the work in Colombia, Central America and supported the beginning of the Diksha’s workshops in Greece.

She has conducted more than 140 events in many countries to support the vision of her beloved Bhagaván.

Today, she coordinates Argentina, Central America and is the former coordinator of Colombia.

The Fountains Guesthouse/House of Self Empowerment just hosted a few Book & Clothing Yard Sales benefiting a few charities around Costa Rica. We didn't make much money but our friend Diane helped remind me that we were recycling things & bringing new joy to the items!! This week we plan on distributing the left over clothes to various charities & even in the youth jails as often they don't even have a blanket let alone a bed to sleep on! We've already given a few BIG bags to the sisters up at the Park in Centro Escazu who give them away in the park to people in need!

Vicki's big pet project is a new program called "Gracias Costa Rica"! I'm a BIG believer that every tourist & non-native that's blessed to visit or live in Costa Rica should gift back to the land/people of Costa Rica. One of those ways is encouraging people to give/bring donations of various things REALLY needed like clothes, shoes (being collected for Helping Hands Walk a Mile In Their Shoes program), medical supplies (including unused vitamins, medication, first aid supplies++), SCHOOL SUPPLIES (MOST desperately needed as the start of the new school year is right around the corner & imagine the stress MANY mothers are feeling to cloth & provide their kids with all the supplies they MUST have for school. How can they do that when MANY are making around $200 a MONTH [the average salary for a housekeeper!!]???), old soccer uniforms, office supplies/equipment, ANYTHING for a baby from formula, toys, clothes++.

ABOUT ISIDE SARMIENTO:
Iside Sarmiento has being doing Feng Shui to personal spaces, commercial and governmental institutions for more than 6 years.

She trained directly with Lillian Too, bestseller writer and head of the World of Feng Shui Emporium and Grandmaster Thomas Lyn Yun, founder of the School for Tantric Buddhism. Both schools using the Bagua as reference.

Luis & Alex not only installed a few jams to help avoid it but they put a special Italian lock with a 3-set MEGA STRONG lock on it (they said they could only find it in Alajuela). The detail and time they took - to match the existing window bars (just smaller/tighter for safety sake), painting the new metal frame and AMAZINGLY - CLEANING UP WELL after themselves!!

I have a feeling these guys are more $$ than most BUT ya get what you pay for!!! Do you want a quick crappy 1/2 _ _ _ job or do you want sturdy/QUALITY with TRUSTWORTHY workers???!!!

They and their staff of over 20 can do just about everything you could need from these Security Gates/Welding to Swimming Pools, New Construction, Total Remodeling, Painting, Kitchens, Cabinetry, Bricklaying, Windows, Tiling, Roofing - just about anything you can need!!
