N SAN JORGE - Nicaragua
SAN JORGE, Rivas, NICARAGUA
SAN JORGE is a small lakeside village on Nicaraguan Lake - where you catch the ferry to go to Isla Ometepe Island - about a 5 minutes taxi ride from Rivas - about 35 minutes from the border of Costa Rica & Nicaragua. From the Costa Rica/Nicaraguan border-the Frontera it’s a $15 taxi.
We just did an overnight Visa Run - got in around 3pm, walked around the tiny town (that took about 5 minutes) including watching 3 HORSES actually playing IN the water & 2 monkeys in a tree!!! We had dinner & being from Costa Rica, we took the brave step of ordering steak (ya don't go to CR for the beef) - I ordered the Steak in a Pepper Sauce & it was SOOOOO TENDER & TASTY!!!
EARLY the next morning I caught the Car Ferry at 7:45am over to the island of Ometepe, stayed onboard & was back by 10am!!! Just $3 each way!!! Had some little things not come up, I could easily have made the 1pm bus back to San Jose (only because this was the end of Nov. - the slowest time of the year (end of Nov.-mid-Dec.).
GETTING THERE:
VICKI's PREFERRED: Hire a taxi - $20/each way (don't let them screw you over [see "GRINGO" written across your forehead]. See my taxi choice below to get there. Do NOT let the taxi take you somewhere else as the random one we took from the border did last time!!)
CHEAP/ON A BUDGET?: Take a Rivas BUS (no clue on how much that is as to me, after 6 hours on a bus, the LAST thing I want to do is be cooped up on ANOTHER bus [all the ones I’ve seen seemed PACKED!!]). Tell the driver Exito San Jorge (San hor-hay). Catch a taxi to San Jorge - $1 (do NOT let anyone charge you more [unless it’s at night])
PLACES TO EAT:
Restaurante el NAVEGANTE - Is a waterfront restaurant with COOL/FUNKY wood furniture & VERY TASTY food at GOOD prices!! The Steak in a Pepper Sauce for $10 http://SarongGoddess.com/Travel/SAN-JORGE-NICARAGUA/14910287_332FU#1110940472_bdyv4-A-LB / take the price on the menu, divide it by 1/2 & take the last number away from it) was surprisingly TENDER - melted in my mouth!! When you first sit down (especially in low season) - ASK what they HAVE as we found they were out of numerous things we REALLY wanted!! EVERYONE really liked their food!!!! HOURS: (coming soon)

THINGS TO DO:
There's not much to do in this tiny/sleepy Fishing Village on Lake but wander around. Every time I've passed by this lake it was VERY choppy & not clear so swim at your own risk I guess.
CAR FERRY BOAT TO OMETEPE (Empresa Turistica "Milton Arcia" - 2-569-4284 (or 4289): $3 each way (you can pay it on the boat), 620-cordobas for a car (not poz if that is each way or round trip as that's about $32) plus you pay for each person as well. The boat ride is about 1 hour each way.
DEPARTS SAN JORGE for Ometepe/Moyogalpa: 7:45am, 10:30am, 2:30pm & 5:45pm.
RETURNS FROM OMETEPE/Moyogalpa for San Jorge: 6am, 9am, 12:30pm & 4pm
There are a couple other boats but this is the one I liked.
IMPORTANT NOTE: BRING BUG SPRAY any time you’re staying in a place near water!!!
PLACES TO STAY
It's been SOOOOOO LONG since I've seen water & I've been MEGA NEEDING a water fix & my bud Diane told me about this hotel!!! So this trip we’re going to be staying as close as possible to it!
HOTEL HAMACAS http://HotelHamacas.com / 001-505-8-810-4144 / Skype: hotel.hamacas / info@HotelHamacas.com)
I LOVED this place!! Located just 125 meters/1-½ blocks from the lake where you catch the Ferry, the beds at Hotel Hamacas are COMFY (Diane said it was the BEST nights she had in her 2 weeks traveling around Nicaragua [THANX for turning me onto it Di]), rooms REALLY clean, all rooms have a private bathroom (no hot water as is typical in NI), tiny fridge with honor bar stocked with water, beers, sodas, etc. (they do a count before you check out), tv (I actually found a few English-speaking tv shows) & screen covered windows. It also includes a VERY filling Typical Breakfast (mainly gallo pinto [rice & beans], egg, toast & I asked for fruit & got a NICE selection [the pineapple in Nicaragua is actually white inside vs. the yellow most of us know]). They have a little Dipping Pool (very shallow but refreshing to cool off), WiFi & the BEST PART is the WONDERFUL owner Coralia who speaks REALLY GOOD ENGLISH!!!
I WILL be returning again & again!!
RATES:
Room with a Fan (I found it sufficient - especially opening the screen covered window) - $27/1, $32/2, $42/3, $52/4
Room with Air-Conditioning - $37/1, $42/2, $52/3, $62/4
Apt. - $55/2, $65/3, $75/4
LOCATION:
Hotel Hamacas is just 1 block from where you catch the ferry to go to Ometepe.
Make sure to tell them that Vicki in Costa Rica shared their info!!!
