Heck, it's the #1 reason EVERY Tico I've asked that speaks GOOD English yet say's when you ask them "Habla Ingles" - they answer "Mas x Menos" - why the don't usually have the confidence to speak English - because they say when they try to do it around family & friends & they make a mistake - they get HUGELY ridiculed by the people they're SUPPOSED to feel "safest" & "supported" with!! I immediately ask them - "But when you speak English around Gringos - do they laugh at you?" & ALWAYS - the stop & pause & think & are surprised when they say "Well, no!!" - which in turn helps them feel even MORE secure to try more next time as most gringos I know are MORE than happy to help them out - if even with pronounciation.
