I’M PUTTING TOGETHER QUITE A FEW OTHER OPTIONS SO TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK/ARE LEANING TOWARDS/I’M MISSING!!!

THINGS TO DO IN THE ARENAL AREA

TRANSPORTATION: HOW TO GET TO ARENAL: Hire a driver in a van – One-way Transfer with an English-speaking driver - $200 which includes 2 extra hours you can use on the nice longer/more scenic route stopping in Sarchi where the typical Tico/heavy wood furniture is made, the beautiful painted oxcart factories or a cool Botanical Garden & the Topiary Gardens. Take some of that time to drive around the lake or go see something. This way YOU get to customize the drive based on what YOU want to see (drive through Grecia or Atenas – the viveros/nursery’s of La Garita – wherever!! In a regular red taxi - $180 (not great if ya’ll are tall). Extra hours is at $20/hour. NOTE: Whenever you stop for meals, you’re supposed to pay for your drivers food (smart as you get to pick their brains!!).

GETTING BACK: Going back can be cheaper &/or easier. There's one van service that will pick you up & drop you off at a designated hotel for $35 per person. If it were ME, I'd FLY back on http://NatureAir.com as it's an AMAZING experience to see the countryside from overhead!!!! Note it usually is a 19 passenger puddle jumper (I LOVE them). There's a flight from Arenal at noon (the ONLY one of the day) & it takes them to Pavas - arriving at 12;25pm & as of THIS moment, they have some $39 seats left BUT I think there's an additional $20 added to it in taxes & fuel charges. WHAT AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE!!!! It’s about 15-20 minutes from the airport.
NOTE: With that said, because the Nature Air flight (& other shuttles) break up your day – not giving you much time in the morning to do anything & then you’re chancing it that the weather will be good when you get back here, you MAY want to hire the driver to bring you back as late as possible (if you’ve already done the scenic route, arriving back at night won’t be such a big thing) so you can get the maximum time in Arenal & get back with enough time to get a bite.

ARENAL PARAISO CANOPY/ZIP LINE TOUR - BEYOND AWESOME!! It was SOOOOOOOO cool flying through the air like Superman!! This tour has 12 platforms, cables over 350 meters long and 80 meters heights!!! This is one of the few that you might get lucky & be able to go Tandem with a guide (ya need to ask)!!! It's also good for "larger" people as they can handle up to 3,000 pounds & it's not that hard to get up to (vs. MANY that are a hike or you have to go by horseback). I'm a BIG out of shape gal & I did it (thanx in part of our Tour Guide EXTRORDINARE Frank Chicas helping me up the little incline. My reason for needing his help is I took the company at their word that long pants were advisable. The thing was it was HOT [& that was in Aug. for the 8:30am tour. I wouldn’t dream of doing it any later] & I got overheated. Next time I’d wear longer shorts - just something to protect my luscious thighs from the harness)!!! Ask for Rafa or Hairol (he’s who I did the tandem with though I just realized, they didn’t let any guys do the tandem on our tour so that may not happen if you’re a guy) & tell him Vicki - the crazy big blonde wild gringa in Escazu sent ya & ask if they'll let you do it!! HINT: Do NOT wear LONG pants!! Wear long shorts but NOT long pants as even if you go at 8am (the BEST tour to go on) - you can get VERY overheated as I did!! I'd do it AGAIN & AGAIN & AGAIN!!! I SOOOOO HIGHLY welcome you to buy the pictures they sell (only $30. HOURS: 8am, 10:30am, 1pm & 3pm for about 2 hours. COST: $45 (transportation included)

Don’t have lots of time? Here is a GREAT all-in-one TOUR that has the Canopy Tour, Horseback Riding, Rapell down a mountain for just $55 & for only $15 more you can add spending the rest of the day at Baldi Hotsprings WITH dinner!!!!
ARENAL CANOPY TOUR http://Canopy.co.cr / 2-479-9511-English-Sara (a REAL sweetie!) or Felix / 2-479-9769 / info@Canopy.co.cr)

Weight/harness limitations - 275lbs/45” tush/waist. The whole thing takes about 2-½ hours for all of it. If you’re doing horseback riding, make sure to wear long pants & everyone should wear closed shoes (that won’t fall off). HOURS: 8, 10:20am, 1 or 3pm (note – the later in the day – the hotter it gets so for ME, I’d do it first thing!!!! Included is a free pickup at your La Fortuna hotel [so you’ll need to leave earlier]). PRICE: Canopy Only - $45. Canopy with 25 minutes horseback riding & rapelling = $55. For just $15 more on each package, you can spend the rest of the day at Baldi Hotsprings AND enjoy Dinner!!!! LOCATION: Montana de Fuego Hotel (hotel pickup is included if you’re staying in La Fortuna)
wear long pants if you’re going to do the horseback riding. At the end of the tour you can chose to do a horseback ride and a rappel (147 ft. high) http://facebook.com/#!/montanadefuego

TOURS of FINCA LUNA NUEVO (which you can take if you're a guest [LOTS cheaper] or visit for the day/tour. They have REALLY COOL tours!!) http://SarongGoddess.com/Travel/Luna-Nuevo-TOURS/9533587_gEqTj - This is the place I stayed at in Sept. - about 30 minutes from Arenal - Finca Luna Nueva http://FincaLunaNuevaLodge.com/rates-lodge-rainforest.html). This is an AWESOME property for someone wanting to chill yet still be close enough to Arenal (about 30 min. away) & to do things. I went with a group of 7-11 slurpie/beer drinkin' guys who had NEVER eaten healthy in their LIFE & they are partially converted as the food was AWESOME Organic food (with vegetarian options of course). The U.N. has recognized them for their Organic Seed program, the grounds are beautiful with MANY optional tours available that are SOOOO COOL (see the link below). To me - one of the MOST IMPORTANT features are their beds - VERY COMFY for my back (RARE in CR where "orthopedic" usually means "hard as a rock!!!") & GOOD QUALITY bedding & touches/features!!

FARM TOUR (Manoa) - http://www.arenalmanoa.com/index.php/Tours/Manoa-Farm.html - FREE!! 8-10am - Before the tourism boom in the area of La Fortuna de San Carlos, the principal income was the milk production. This walk goes through the main productive activities of Manoa farm; ornamental plantations, Los Palmitos trail, sheep farm, pigs and chickens, eggs production and milk production. The trip start at the Front Desk Hotel, where our bilingual guide will be waiting and offering the use of rubber boots for the trip. Finally we will arrive at Manoa dairy where we can appreciate the milking process and if you like to milk one of our cows we will prepare one for you. What to bring: comfortable clothing, hiking boots or tennis shoes, binoculars, camera, sunscreen lotion, insect repellent and rain gear (during rainy season).

RIO CELESTE WATERFALL, RIVER AND HOT SPRINGS – If there’s one tour I REALLY would LOVE to go on – RIO CELESTE is it!!! I REALLY wish I could go to as out of ALL areas here, this area intrigues me the MOST in all of Costa Rica BUT, alas, I tore the tendon in my knee a few months ago (just walkin' on the "sidewalks" in Costa Rica!!). It's a HIKE into it (depending on how far you go in - 1-4 hours & the water I hear is CHILLY!!) but the water - it's this AMAZING blue!!!! It’s North of Arenal by about 1-1/2 hrs I think. Spend a half or full day hiking along the Rio Celeste. The Rio Celeste is named after the color of its water—a bright, jewel-blue—caused by many dissolved, natural minerals, like cobalt. A guide will take you through secondary and primary rainforest. From trailhead, it is only a 2 km. (1.2-mi) hike to the breathtaking Rio Celeste waterfall. The adventurous can swim near pounding 70-foot falls. You will leave La Fortuna for the Rio Celeste and have a typical breakfast enroute. Once you arrive at Tenorio Volcano National Park you will begin this hike through the tropical rain forest. You will then arrive at Los Tenideros of the Rio Celeste. This is the site where two streams of crystalline water come together and form the heavenly blue color that gives the river its name. You will then return along trails, rich with ecological wonders, that lead you to the Ollas, openings in the earth where we can gather healing mud, take a mud bath, and a dip in the natural hot springs all while observing the attractions of the Tenorio Volcano. You will continue your hike through the jungle to seek out the furnace of the volcano and hike near vents that expel gases of extreme high temperatures. On your decent you will get to see the spectacular Rio Celeste waterfall whose color makes it one of a kind. Your final reward is an exquisite lunch at the end of our journey. Recommended for people in good physical condition. A 7 km (4.3-mi) hike takes you beyond the falls and deeper into the rain virgin rain forest, home to pumas, tapirs and other animals. You will trek to the streaming hot and cool springs of Tenorio Volcano, mineral mud pits and the blue lagoon of the Rio Celeste. Allow a full day to hike, swim, lunch, and rest up afterwards. COST: I’ve seen these priced everwhere from $95-$150 with transportation. DEPART: around 7am. http://youtube.com/watch?v=VqxUcFdqoG4 http://arenaladventures.com/arenal_volcano_tour_celeste_river.html# http://youtube.com/watch?v=DuaRBHC5EBw&NR=1 http://RuralCostaRica.com/rio-celeste-tour.html

Venado’s Adventure CAVE TOUR / Gabinarraca’s Caves http://CavernasDeVenado.com) - The amazing Venado Caves (Cavernas de Venado, Gabinarracas´s Caves) are made of wonderful limestone rocks, stalactites, stalagmites and corals, and they are located at Costa Rica, only 35 minutes from La Fortuna of San Carlos (Alajuela). Strange and amusing stone formations are shaped by the forces of an underground river. The caves first formed during the Miocene Period, about 10 to 30 millions years ago. After their formation, the caves remained below sea level for an extended period of time before tectonic movements brought them to the surface. At this time, the Guatusos aborigines became the first people to stumble upon their discovery. Located just south of La Fortuna, the gateway to The Arenal Lake and Arenal Volcano, are the Caves of Venado. Dating back over 7 million years, the Venado Caves are the direct result of water currents penetrating and passing through the surrounding limestone rocks. The caves contain four different species of bats and numerous types of spiders, many of which are endemic to the area. Some of the spiders have extremely long feelers, designed to assist them in total darkness. The bats fly endlessly above, sometime clustering in groups of a hundred or so. It is more common to find them attached to the ceiling above than along the walls. When your footing is secure, shine the light above and you should find them looking down on you below. COST: $15-entrance only (you get there on your own), entrance & lunch-$30. Transportation from La Fortuna - $40, $50/w lunch.

Resturante Brisas Del Lago (2-695-3363) in San Louise on the left hand side of the rd before you get to town but after 5 corners. I have had almost everything on the menu at this point and have LOVED all that I I have eaten. Great overlook on the lake. Intimat and romantic. And the guy cooks excellently.

Aguido's Bar owners have moved their operation to Equus! It is by far the best BBQ cow, pig and chicken I have tasted in my life. Their secret BBQ sauce is really special and the meat always melts in my mouth. Cooked over a wood fire, all employees are family. I encourage you to try the BBQ at Equus between Rio Piedras and Plaza del Cafe (Tierras Morenas cruze). I also encourage you to go upstairs to eat so that you can look out over the beautiful lake view while eating. Also make sure you hike the trail to the secretly hidden disco in the woods while they cook your food. Very interesting. Best part, low prices! http://transitionsabroad.com/listings/travel/travel_to_eat/cuisine_of_costa_rica_and_the_soda.shtml

LAS ORQUÍDEAS RESTAURANT - A rather hidden ma-and-pa place at the little park down from Banco Nacional in Nuevo Arenal, where the copy places are. It's at the end of the left road. ("There was a storm some months ago so we have no sign."). They serve a full-meal hamburger for people who can extend their mouth like a snake. Legend has it that a gringo taught them how to make hamburgers. Other food is typical and very good as well. This hidden treasure trove maintains very affordable prices. Mondays closed.

Fernando's - Very Popular, international cuisine,

Cafe Vienna in La Fortuna (2-479-7479) - TASTY pastries - the apple Kuchen frisch aus dem Ofen, sandwich we ordered was very good too, but there weren't many options...only 2 choices - vegetarian or ham and cheese. But it was good and the bread tasted very fresh, Bread pudding, spice cake, and thick moist chocolate brownies. wow. We had a reasonable breakfast, $5 to $7 which included coffee. The coffee was excellent. They had extra for sale. Bread was fresh, bacon was excellent. Something for every palate. Well done!
