MANUEL ANTONIO & Quepos

.
I haven't updated this info lately but here's what I've gathered last time:

GETTING TO MANUEL ANTONIO / QUEPOS
If you are considering the driving route to M.A. - I HIGHLY welcome you to consider hiring a driver (to me this is the BEST BEST BEST way to see Costa Rica - especially on your first trip as if you are driving yourself – if you take a bus or fly, you will only get about 5% of the experience as you would hiring a Guide/Driver [CR does NOT have addresses & few street signs & VERY FEW road signs, the roads are OFTEN crappy if not worse - Many filled with BIG potholes, sometimes SUDDENLY missing manhole covers, etc. - to say nothing about the “fun” (NOT) rickety bridges you get to cross over that when you look down between the open WOOD slats - you will see the alligator infested water below. There is NO WAY I will be owning a car in CR as I drive like Mario Andretti which you can NOT do here & I would have ulcers & kill people. Taxi's keep me sane, happy, not having to worry about the car getting broken into or worse, etc.).

To me, the BEST experience is to hire a Guide/Driver to take you TO Manuel Antonio (or wherever) & fly BACK on NatureAir (below). Not only is it an AWESOME way to fly/see C.R. but it is only a 20 min. flight (vs. a 3++ hour, not so fun at times drive)! (if you’re limited in time, you can fly down to M.A. & meet up with the driver there & have him bring you back so you get some touring time/to see things. NOTE though – it gets dark around 5:30-6pm here.

FLY - Flying to Quepos (that’s the airport you’d fly into to go to Manuel Antonio & take a bus, taxi or a shuttle into MA) is just 25 minutes by air from the San Jose area (vs. 3-4++ hours driving). It’s an AWESOME way to see CR. Need to get an ocean/beach fix &/or don’t have much time? This is a NICE QUICK way to get there!!
NATUREAIR http://NatureAir.com / 1-800-235-9272-US / 2-299-6000-within CR). MY #1 CHOICE! #1 - You fly in/out of Pavas Airport (WAY better/easier than the main Santamaria/SJO airport, ESPECIALLY if you’re in San Jose or the South/West end of the Central Valley (like Escazu, Santa Ana, etc.) & it’s just 7 min. from the Fountains Guesthouse (with no traffic). #2 - I also LOVE this airline because they’re the FIRST (& to date, the only) Carbon Neutral Airline http://NatureAir.com/why-fly-nature-air-costa-rica.aspx #3 - Customer Service has been GREAT EVERY TIME I’ve called them!! #4 – They have the coolest design on their airplanes!! LAST MINUTE - check their web site for last minute specials (especially the day before. Once I got a Guest a $27 one-way & $45 return going the next day – just for the day!). Their planes are 19 passenger twin-engine puddle jumpers (personally I feel VERY SAFE in them!! Especially compared to the other airline option with a single engine). NOTE: In rainy season I wouldn’t fly in the afternoon unless I had to (AROUND June-beginning of Nov. being the peak of it) & ESPECIALLY in windy season (about Dec./Jan.). If you book your flight through NatureVacations ONLY, you can purchase a pretty cheap transfer to wherever you’re going (which you can’t booking air only through the regular ticket line). Make sure to ask for Leanne (LHuntley@NatureAir.com) & tell her Vicki referred you!! Currently in Green/low season they from FROM Pavas at 9am or 2:30pm & return at 7:50am, 10:45am & 3pm

SANSA - Flies from Santamaria/SJO (the main) airport. This is great if you’re arriving in/out of SJO airport immediately if you can connect properly and if you’re staying on the north side of the Central Valley (like Alajuela) but if you’re in San Jose or on the West end, factor in another $20 or so dollars each way to get to/from. NOTE: Sansa planes only have ONE engine (for the love of Goddess, I just can not figure out their website) (2-221-9414 / http://flysansa.com)

DRIVER/GUIDE - Oscar is the BEST driver/guide I’ve found ANYWHERE!! He’s actually gone and LIVED in the jungle for periods of time to study the animals/flora/fauna!! If he takes you into Manuel Antonio Park, you will often find many of the “official” Park Guides latching onto Oscar’s tour as he has so much knowledge on things++!
Another REALLY GOOD one is Carlos (in his off time he’s also a Forest Ranger & is a driver/guide in his off time).

DRIVER/TRANSPORTATION ONLY - Just need a driver/transportation – I use Frank Chicas’ Enjoying Costa Rica Tours. He has quite a few English-speaking drivers & 8 LEGAL Tourism vans – many less than a year old (& he can hook you up with larger buses+).
Nella at Exotur http://exotur.com / info@exotur.com / 011-506-8-384-7403) - GO

To connect with all of these, email me at CostaRicaResourceGuide@gmail.com or call – from the U.S./Canada call on my San Diego # - 1-619-819-2726 or within Costa Rica – 8-378-6679

BUS - Transportes Morales (SJ-2-223-5567, Quepos-2-777-0263) - Route 613 Quepos & Manuel Antonio Express departs daily from the Coco Cola Terminal (Calle 16 & Avenida 1- Avenida 3) in San Jose (the CocaCola Terminal is where you’d catch the blue Santa Ana-Calle Vieja bus to come to the Fountains Guesthouse). The DIRECT Bus leaves from SJ at 6am, 9am (Mon.-Sat.), noon, 2:30pm & 5pm and takes 3 3/4 hours. It returns FROM Quepos at 4am (Mon.-Sat.), 6am, 9:30am, noon, 2:30pm & 5pm. PRICE: around $5. REGULAR/COLECTIVO (slow boat to China/making LOTS of stops) leaves at 7am, 10am, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm & 5pm (Mon.-Fri.) & returns at 5, 8am, 2pm & 4pm & takes ABOUT 4 1/2 hours.
Transportes Unidos la Costanera - REGULAR service – Route 639 which goes to Playa Dominical/Uvita but drops people off in Quepos. It leaves SJ at 7am, 11:30am & 1:30pm (Sat. & Sun.). 4 hours to Quepos.
From Quepos you catch a Route 653 Shuttle Bus that runs every 20 min.
(note buses do NOT have bathrooms so you get to stop when THEY tell you to stop/go!! [not good if you have a small bladder])

SHUTTLE - INTERBUS - Picks up in Sabana Norte - In front of Crowne Plaza Corabisi Hotel AT the Oxydental Torre Molino (in front of Mas x Menos) - HOURS: SJ to M.A.-8:15am or 2:30pm / Returns 7:45am / 1:45pm. - $39 each way.

THINGS TO DO DURING THE DAY
MANUEL ANTONIO NATIONAL PARK is a MUST MUST MUST SEE/DO!!! You WILL see all sorts of wildlife here – ESPECIALLY if you’re with the right guide!! Hire your own Personal Guide – I hear GREAT things about Gama (8-818-8207 / HolaGama@yahoo.com) who’s $45/per person(includes tickets, water and fruit) for about 3 hours (discounts for groups). Hire a Tour Guide within the park for about 2 hours - $25 (I’ve also seen $39) + $7 ticket/per person (2 person minimum). It's high but WELL worth it!! HOURS: Tues.-Sun. 7am-4pm (you MUST leave BY 4pm as often the incoming tide cuts off the park’s exit and in come the crocodiles!) - CLOSED on Mon. PRICE: $7 entrance. It’s at the Southern end of this area. Better yet – hire Oscar with Enjoying Costa Rica Tours (871-2900) to drive you from wherever to Manuel Antonio and get an EARLY start so he can lead you into the park. I’ve had MANY Guests do this and each time they said that the OTHER “official” park guides were jumping in on Oscars tours!!! He has AMAZING knowledge (but if you go every so often to live in the jungles to learn more – you’d be pretty darn AMAZING also!!!).

BEACHES - WARNING!!! This area has MANY TREACHEROUS WATERS and there are NO LIFEGUARDS on the beach!! I GOT CAUGHT IN A RIP-TIDE HERE!!!!!! BE CAREFUL AND NEVER SWIM WITHOUT OTHERS IN THE WATER AND ON THE BEACH.

Local lifeguards, competitive surfers and visiting instructors provide a dynamic learning experience. Instruction is one-on-one and students are often able to stand up and ride a wave by the end of their very first day. A loaner board is provided for 2 hours after each surfing lesson to further hone your skills. Class schedules depend on the local tides. SCUBA DIVING Trip - For clients taking our Discover Scuba Diving Course or involved with other courses, Pick up time may be as early as 7am. The dive shop is the first stop: all divers must complete some simple paperwork. This is a PADI guideline. At this time we also get equipment sizing if it wasn’t taken on the reservation phone call. Within a few minutes the divers will be on their way to the pier where the dive team will welcome them on the boat. All gear will be prepared and ready for the divers. The first dive site is within 15 to 25 minutes. As we leave the pier the PADI Certified Dive master or Instructor onboard will brief the divers as to where the dive site is and their expectations. Divers begin to suit up, and go down for their first dive. Upon completion of the first dive the divers have fruits, juices and water during the surface interval, along with a fresh water shower. Surface time is spent cruising the Manuel Antonio waters, visiting with the Dolphins and the Whales, as we cruise around the park. Within 30 to 45 minutes we are ready for dive #2 at a different dive site. Once again the divers will get a briefing from the Divemaster. Upon completion of dive #2 the boat begins its return to the pier; transportation will be waiting for the clients. There will be a brief stop at the dive shop for divers to complete logbooks, then back to your hotel.
