PLAYA GRANDE, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Do you love the beach yet prefer QUIET & CALM?

PLAYA GRANDE is the closest area you’ll get to that as you don’t have neighbors on top of you & you’re surrounded by nature!!

ABOUT PLAYA GRANDE: Playa Grande is 3 solid miles of pristine beach located within the 4 beach city encompassing Marino las Baulas de Guanacaste National Park - an important Sea Turtle Nesting Site for the world’s largest turtles - the Leatherbacks as they come ashore mainly October/November-April/May-ish to lay their eggs (a MUST SEE tour/activity late night!! FYI - Removing eggs are HIGHLY ILLEGAL as is using a flashlight at night). It’s located on the Northern Pacific Coast of Guanacaste - JUST north of Playa Grande Bebach. It’s consistently rated one of the top beaches of Costa Rica & one of the top SURF SPOTS in Costa Rica. It’s just north of the much more developed party town of Tamarindo (aka “TamaGringo” because of it’s many gringo ammenities). At low tide, you can walk across the estuary rivermouth. Otherwise, boat taxis can ferry you across or deliver you right to Hotel Bula Bula where you’re just 200 meters (about 2 blocks) from your home!

LOCAL SPECIES: There are 4 different species of Howler Monkey (aka "congo monkey" in Costa Rica) in Costa Rica. Are you a light sleeper? You may want to bring your own ear plugs as these Howler Monkeys can be MILES away & their ROAR can sound like they’re next door!! They’re cool to watch swinging from tree to tree or just hangin’ around!! They eat canopy leaves, fruit, buds, flowers and nuts. An estuary tour makes for your best chance to see a howler.

The estuary serves as "Nature's Nursery" - providing an important spawning site for many fish and other marine creatures. Further back, the estuary looks pre-historic.

Don't want to cook? Enjoy the WONDERFUL Great Waltini's Restaurant and Bar at Hotel Bula Bula (some of MY FAVORITE FOOD in Costa Rica [ESPECIALLY their Fried Calamari!!]. They're the ONLY place I’d spend my holiday meals & celebrations!!!!) or one of the other restaurants in the area. Want to head over to Tamarindo (aka TamaGringo) for the action? The staff at Hotel Bula Bula can arrange a Water Taxi for you or book tours, etc.!! They're there to assist you (make sure to tell Todd, Wally, Adan & Felix that Vicki sent you!!!)

HOW TO GET BETWEEN PLAYA GRANDE & TAMARINDO: Playa Grande is a BEAUTIFUL CALM Water Taxi ride down the Tamarindo Estuary in a Panga - a small boat that you catch at the mouth of the Matapalo River that spills out to the Pacific Ocean. On this scenic “tour” you may see the protruding vertical roots (or pneumatophores. These short projections stick up out of the mud to help aerate the trees) of 5 species of mangrove trees, birds, crocodiles. The cost is about $2/person each direction (the price often depends on the amount of people it’s carrying). It is about a 5 minute ride down the estuary. Sundays in Costa Rica are for family, church and soccer, so boat service may not be readily available.

HOW TO GET TO PLAYA GRANDE: The closest airport is Liberia (airport code: LIA)-Daniel Oduber Quiros Airport - about an hour north/East of Playa Grande. We can help coordinate transportation.
The cheaper flights usually take you into San Jose/SJO-Juan SantaMaria Airport, BUT, it’s about a 5 hour drive (most likely LOTS more than that during the holidays) & it won't be cheap so you may have to spend your first & last night in the San Jose area. If you’re in Costa Rica, you can catch a flight to Tamarindo on http://NatureAir.com (the ONLY airline in the WORLD that leaves behind NO Carbon Footprint!!!! A WONDERFULLY CONSCIOUS company & their planes are TWIN-ENGINE [CRUCIAL to me coming from a family of pilots!!]) from Pavas Airport (if you have to overnight in the San Jose, stay at http://HouseOfConnectionsGuesthouse.com which is located in Escazu - only about 10 minutes from Pavas Airport) or Sansa Airlines (tends to be more expensive & a single engine plane) from SJO airport BUT, they only have 3 flights a day on small puddle jumper about 18 or so passenger planes (an AWESOME way to see Costa Rica!!) which may be sold out if you wait too long. It’s about a 50-110 minute flight (it varies on if it stops off in Liberia first) & runs anywhere from $90ish-$130+ish (higher during holidays).
