ANIMALS - Reptiles & Amphibians Refuge - REFUGIO HERPETOLOGICO http://RefugioHerpetologico.com / 2-282-4614 / http://Facebook.com/pages/Refugio-Herpetologico-de-Costa-Rica/138516509455?v=info&ref=nf / info@RefugioHerpetologico.com) - As of Jan. ’11, the West-side has it’s own little Wildlife Refuge / Refugio Herpetologico – a Reptile & Amphibian Refuge helping save monkeys, macaws, snakes & more!! As much as possible, their intention is to return all animals to their natural environment (this is NOT a zoo). This is a WONDERFUL place to learn of the various animals (to help dispel many myths) – even getting to touch many! They provide Foster Care for nature and sustainable development. Generate scientific information. This is a tiny place so what you’re paying for is knowing you’re helping animals (the other day Rodolfo went out to give the firefighters lessons on how to capture boa’s properly, etc.). ANIMAL RESCUE – Do you see an animal in danger, being treated cruely, hurt? Call their Emergency ANIMAL RESCUE number (open to ALL sorts of animals that arrive beaten, sick+ - 8-828-0324). OWNER: Rodolfo (speaks English). LOCATION: ON Calle Vieja (the street outside our grounds)/Old Road towards Santa Ana at Alto de las Palomas – 400 mts East of el Restaurante Cebolla Verde. COST: Adults-$14, Kids 3-12-$7, Students with Valid ID-$11, Night Tour (8 people min.)-$14/pp. Residents - Adults-2,000-c, Kids 3-12-1,000-c, Gold Card holders/Students with Valid ID-$1,500, Night Tour (8 people min.)-2,000-c/pp. HOURS: Tues.-Sun. 9am-4pm.

BANKS - Out the quinta to your Left on the next corner is a Banco Premier (it’s the “rich” division of Banco Nacional [I believe you have to open an account with at least $100,000] & I don’t think they’ll let anything but members in) with an atm but they ONLY give out colones. Closest atm/teller with dollar & colones – exit the quinta, cross the street directly in front, walk down 2-1/2 blocks to the Right to Plaza Laurels & go all the way to your back towards the Left to Scotia. Otherwise, go out the grounds – crossing the street & going down 7 blocks just pas Mas x Menos market to another Scotia (usually with a line).

BIESANZ WOODWORKS, BOTANICAL GARDEN TOUR, TREE NURSERY, SHOWROOM & GALLERY http://Biesanz.com / 2-289-4337 / Woodworks@Biesanz.com) - A MUST SEE FREE TOUR (PLEASE buy something – don’t just use it as a form of free entertainment) & Barry & Sarah are GREAT people!!!! Come see how Barry makes these BEAUTIFUL bowls & other items made out of exotic woods - traditional woodworking art joinery married to contemporary design. Humidors, jewelry boxes, turned bowls, boxes++. LOCATION: Escazu (Bello Horizonte) - Directions in Spanish: Estamos en Escazú, 800 mts sur de la iglesia Católica de Bello Horizonte, casa #33 típica amarilla con franja azul, mano izquierda, rotulo en frente.

BOOKS - The office at the House of CONNECTIONS is home to the SELF EMPOWERMENT LENDING LIBRARY (see below) that guests are welcome to use while visiting us!!! We’re also a Donation Drop-Off Point for many charities, hence we often have a bunch of real varied books that we store for various groups we share them with when they have Book Sales. Guests are welcome to borrow from them or bring some to SWAP!!

BOTANICAL GARDEN - See “BIESANZ” above. For the largest one in Costa Rica see “The Ark” below.

DENTISTS / DOCTORS (see “Medical” below)

ESCAZU (SAN ANTONIO) (2 villages up the hill from House of CONNECTIONS) - MONUMENT TO BOYEROS - A new MUST SEE in San Antonio de Escazu! Sculptor Mario Parra has created an AMAZING piece of art - to me one of the MOST AWESOME pieces of art I have EVER seen!! - "A Tribute to Boyeros!" This SPECTACULAR piece is a 210 foot long rock wall sculpture that overlooks the Central Valley & symbolizes the traditional values & life of the typical Escazu farmer. A trip to see this monument & the little no stoplight village of San Antonio de Escazu will be WELL worth the trip from anywhere! The sculpture is located in the plaza across from the entrance to the Church of San Antonio de Escazu.

ESCAZU CENTRO - This is a GREAT area to just wander & people watch for the “real people” of Costa Rica.

ESCAZU CITY TOUR (in the process of being designed)

TYPICAL TICO DINNER (CHEAP!!) - Depending on when you arrive, usually the first and/or last night(s) we usually go to dinner at LA CASONA DE LALY - Located in a 200 year old pueblo home with a cool open, VERY tipico interior, big aquarium & a bunch of caged birds located in Centro Escazu - the heart of the REAL part of Escazu!! It is CONSISTANTLY HANDS DOWN THE BEST TICO RESTAURANT I’VE FOUND & BY FAR my FAV spot to go for Tipico Tico food as it’s GOOD & REALLY REALLY CHEAP with food like REALLY TASTY CASADAS like #9 – with fish (Marlin - I LOVE mine La Plancha/grilled with LOTS of Ajo/garlic for ONLY 1,700-c [around $3!!]!!), chicken or beef or pork chops grilled, fried or with garlic – YUMMMMM – & here they’re only 1,300-2,800-c!! I LOVE their CEVICHE (1,800-c). They have a BIG menu ranging from Bocas/appitizers starting at 900-c to 4,000 (averaging 1100-1500-c). I’m not a fan of their guacamole (I don’t believe they use Haas which to me makes a good guac but I’ve known others that really like it). They have the BEST MARGARITAS I have EVER had (& my other business is in Puerto Vallarta, México!! They’re on the rocks – the proper way to make margaritas!!). Recently I treated a friend for her birthday (big spender me!!!) & she had one beer, I had a club soda, we split an order of YUMMMM ceviche & one of patagonias, I had the casada with chicken (rice, rice, beans, salad, platano!!) & she had the chile relleno PLUS they gave her a nice size piece of b'day cake!! $15! I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! EVERYTHING I’ve had here was been REALLY TASTY! Check out the fun painted wall in the women’s bathroom (I haven’t checked out the men’s so maybe they have something). HOURS: Tues.-Sat. 11am-11pm., Sun. 11am–6pm

FOLKLORIC DANCERS SHOW/DINNER – Escazu (San Antonio) - WAYY up in the hills of San Antonio Escazu (MANY taxi’s can not even make it up here so make sure you let them know before they come to pick you up) with AMAZING VIEWS of the whole Central Valley!! For a touristy place (including Nationals), they have pretty tasty traditional Costa Rican food at pretty decent prices! The BIG highlight here is their Wed. & Thurs. FOLKLORIC DANCERS SHOW from around 8:30-9pm (no additional charge – just order off the menu). ROMANTIC. They also have a LOUNGE for those not wanting to dine there yet enjoy the view. LIVE MUSIC (GUITAR) – Fri. & Sat. 9pm-mid. HOURS: Tues.-Sun. 12:30pm-11pm Sun. 12:30-5pm

FOOD - DINING OUT (or have it Delivered!!) - Within 15 blocks any direction of us we have 50+++ Restaurants & MANY even deliver (including Goddess forbid – McDonald’s, Bagelman’s, Burger King, Domino’s, Pizza Hut & Papa John’s)!! CR is not really known as a culinary hot spot but our area has LOTS of variety to choose from with everything from Vegetarian (with an Asian spin), Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Continental, Americana, Steaks, Sushi, Jewish, Subway, Typico/Tipical CR fare+++! Request for a copy of Vicki’s new Restaurant Guide or check out the start of it posted at http://CostaRicaEatsGuide.com (currently down but email us & we can send you a copy of that guide). We have a binder of menus under the big cork board (on the right).

GYMS - We have 2 main gyms within walking distance – World Gym http://WorldGymCR.com) & Arena Trak http://ArenaTrekGym.com) plus a Pilates Studio 3 blocks away (as well as another one further) & a gym where you can hire a Private Trainer just 9 blocks away. We can usually (though not always) get you some sort of a discount.

HERB GARDEN (see “Botanical Gardens”)

HIKING - Hike up to the top of Pico Blanco with it’s incredible views of the Central Valley.
Pico Tours does organized Day Hikes around CR – including the owner Warner’s home city of Escazu!! Check out their schedule at http://PicoTours.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=54&Itemid=64 There are some AMAZING areas to hike up to WAYYYYYY up the hills BUT it is NOT suggested you do this solo or without a guide in general as there’s a waterfall way up there & I’ve heard it’s at least a 1-1/2-2+ hour hike both ways (once you enter the area) BUT, there CAN be banditos up in them thar hills!!! & cell phones don’t seem to like to work up there!!!

INTERNET CAFÉ - Didn’t bring your laptop & need more than 10 minutes a day that we gift you with on our computer? There is an internet café 7 blocks to the left – just past the Mas x Menos grocery store.

MARKET - Just 7 blocks from the House of CONNECTIONS Guesthouse, you have Mas X Menos (pronounced Mas PER Menos) – a large market with many gringo products (Goddess forbid it’s owned by WalMart [which owns about 90% of Costa Rica’s markets]). They’re open from 7am-MIDNIGHT!! 2 blocks up the hill from MXM is Auto Mercado – THE premier Gringo Market (7am-10pm)! On our corner to the Left is a little Pulpería (corner store) though it’s REAL limited & has no veges/fruti or alcohol (Mon.-Fri. 7am-7pm, Sat. 8am-¿). On the corner to our Right, in Plaza Country Club is new wonderful semi-liquor store that has some of the best prices around (though their selection is small). On the street at el Ray Chinese Restaurant is a guy that sells fruits, veges & eggs out of his carport weekdays till around 4pm. Sarreto’s is about 12 blocks away & it has the best selection around for veges, more gringo things & wine/alcohol. I like to support him if I haven’t made the Farmer’s Market/Feria.

ORGANIC LOCAL FERIA’S / FARMERS MARKET – Centro Escazu - WEDNESDAY from 8-11am (though they often run out EARLY!!). They have some of the most beautiful produce I have EVER seen – organic or chemicalled!!! This is a great way to connect with locals!

LOCAL FERIA’S / FARMERS MARKET - On SATURDAY from 5am till around 1pm (though many leave around noon) Centro Escazu hosts a nice Feria/Farmers Market where you can mingle with the locals, experience/see LOTS of new things (try MY FAV Agua de Pipa – young coconut water – GREAT for high blood pressure & dehydration & the pork on a stick at the booth next to him – my Sat. morning ritual!!) & buy FRESH fruits & veges for WAYYYY CHEAPER than the market!! This is just a small 2 block Feria so if you’re wanting the REAL experience, the BEST is in Guadalupe (about a 30 min. taxi ride [about 15 on Sat. early morning). A feria is a MUST SEE EXPERIENCE!!

MASSAGE THERAPISTS - I have numerous WONDERFUL Massage Therapists that see their clients here – check out http://CostaRicaMassageTherapistGuide.com

MEDICAL - Medical/Dental Work & Tests – both Western & alternative/ HOLISTIC is WAYYYYY CHEAPER in Costa Rica – on average 40-60%!!! We can connect you to try to fix whatever ails you!! For a few years we've been doing LOTS of research on Medical Tourism - getting feedback from REAL people that have ACTUALLY experienced various doctors, dentists, etc. & I KNOW how to ask questions to get DETAILED/HONEST answers/feedback that we share with you!! Medical tests – everything from the basic cholestral screens to MRIs – we can connect you!! CR even has Stem Cell treatments which many have had BIG success with everything from curing diabetes, cancer, HIV+++!!! I’ve JUST started a list of Alternative Healing modalities - http://CostaRicaAlternativeHealing.blogspot.com One of the MAIN people our guests go to is Gene McDonald for Auriculotherapy (like Acupuncture but without needles – it’s an electric stim or just point thing that he often gets AMAZING results from. Some charge a Membership Fee (often around 5,000-c & some take a credit card imprint [in case you don’t bring a dvd back]). You MUST bring your ORIGINAL Passport. Sometimes you can find New Releases but note that OFTEN they are copies hence don’t always work well in some DVD players or are just not good quality.
PURCHASE MOVIES CHEAP - GRINGO MOVIES http://GringoMovies.com / 8-864-8601) - They make DVD’s copies of movies - new & old (sometimes they even get yet to be released movies!!). Across the street at Café Torino (only till 7pm) they have a nice little bar in their back left area with tasty pastries & gellato! Café Te Con Te across the street also has a small selection of coffee drinks (no alcohol. Both in Plaza del Rio ain’t cheap because you’re paying for the ambiance/high rent district). SPIRITUALITY - There is often some sort of class/workshop going on each week. See also “Unity” below.

SPORTS BAR - Time Out Taven - LOCATION: 5 blocks up the hill on Calle Country Club (more of a nice gringo hang-out with GOOD quality gringo food & the most tv’s). Cassava – the most upscale “Sports Bar” I’ve seen in this country with a BIG OUTSIDE area, NICE inside, full menu. LOCATION: Up in Centro Escazu (a taxi ride). There’s a NICE NEW one that JUST opened Aug. ’10 at Avenida Escazu & is part of Nova Cinema (home to the iMax & VIP Movie Theatres!!!). Henry’s –like TGIF for Tico’s – processed drinks & expensive generic food. STADIUM - Costa Rica has a new (as of March 26, ’11) $82 million National Stadium donated by the Chinese http://NuevoeStadioNacional.com) that is just ONE 7 minute (from outside our grounds) bus ride away (longer of course for traffic). UNITY SPIRITUAL CENTER - Unity Costa Rica is in Piedades – Sun. 11am-noon-ish. Lunch (3,000-colones but first timers are FREE!! [though please donate something to the service]). & they usually have a class afterwards from 1-3pm. Piedades is 2 cities West of us – about a 5,500-colon (about $11) taxi ride or we might be able to find you a ride so you can contribute towards gas or for 240-colones you can take a bus there & walk up the hill 3 1/2 blocks. Usually it’s pretty easy to catch a ride back if you ask! http://SarongGoddess.com/gallery/5552336_D64kv

VEGE OUT & WATCH/RENT VIDEOS/DVD’s - We’ve had some people donate some oldies (including LOTS of Barbra Streisand ones!), some modern, some Spiritual Cinema+! MANY video stores in CR pirate movies hence often carry things before they hit the stores. We have a few in the area or have it delivered!

WALKING GROUP - We have a Walking Group that actually walks around the INSIDE of the MultiPlaza MALL!!! They meet on Tues., Thurs. & Sat. from 8:30-9:30am on the OUTSIDE entrance to Cemaco (on the North end of the old section). It’s led by an instructor from ArenaTrek Gym & takes different routes each time. This is a FREE activity!!

WALKING / HIKING (see “Hiking”) - Escazu is a pretty good area to walk – lots of flat land, hills, etc.!! I personally feel safe but safe is as safe as a person is! Some people are going to be “victims” wherever they go!! DON’T BE STUPID!! BE AWARE at ALL times!!
There's a small park about 6 blks behind TGIFridays & KFC in Trejos Montelegre. It used to have some paths for jogging/walking, just a couple blocks from the swim club. Plenty of security around the area.
We have some small WATERFALLS with AWESOME CITY VIEWS that are quite the hike. Starting at the river it is a 1.5 to 3 hour hike to get to the waterfall. Take the Escazu-San Antonio bus WAYYYYYYYYY UP the hill till it veers to the Right (where it ends & turns around to go back down the hill) & walk up the hill about 600 mts OR take the San Antonio-El Carmen which goes way up by it – past Ticquicia (about 10 more minutes by bus). (Ashleigh & Alonso live 2 houses over from Super Aguimar). It’s a LONG – probably hour++ haul WAYYYYYYYY UP there & be 100% aware as there are no phones/things up there – just be safe.
DIRECTIONS: BUS - San Antonio-Barrio los Filtros / el Curio (catch this 1 block up past Scotia Bank – on the South/West corner) to the end (if you take another San Antonio one – tell the driver you want to get off to hike up to the river / waterfall – “quiero bajar a caminar hasta el río / cascada”
DRIVING/WALKING: Go up to San Antonio de Escazu (either walk WAYYYYY up, or my way – take a taxi!), up past Hotel Pico Blanco.
Follow the main road 1km further up till you get to the River/Rio Agres (most people won’t know what you mean when you call it by that name). Go up the hill, following the signs that say “Best Western-Paradise” till you come to the fork/split & veer to your RIGHT (?) & about 5 minute walk from there you should come to the river. It is NOT obvious that there are trails here so walk up to the barbed wire fence (it’s a TINY NARROW opening so it’s not advisable for larger people) & go through. Cross a field & you’ll find more wire fences that you go through (remember, these are narrow openings) or under (separating the barbed wire [watch that bare skin of yours!]). CROSSING THE RIVER – Luke suggested crossing 100’ before the concrete waterfall (if you cross after that it may be lots more difficult) & follow a stream bed for awhile. There you’ll come to another barbed wire crossing on your Left which will lead you up a large STEEP grassy hill with a large tree on top & SPECTACULAR VIEWS of the mountains & Central Valley. Directions for continuing up to the waterfall to come.
THIS IS DEFINITELY FOR THE MORE ADVENTUROUS TYPES & there aren’t many people up there. BE CAREFUL as it’s NOT unusual for banditos to be there so do NOT take ANYTHING you’re not willing to give up!!!
There, head off the road and follow the river up to the waterfall. This is mostly flat but there is a steep area along the way & to get to the waterfall, you’ll need to cross some rivers (that may be a big raging – over boulders) – so you’ll get wet feet. This is the easy way of explaining it. This is not easy to find so avoid getting lost in this mountains by hiring Pico Tours to take you on a guided tour - http://PicoTours.com / 2-289-6135 / PicoTours@racsa.co.cr with Warner Rojas &/or Thessa Rienhart (30,000-c-1-2 people for a ½ day hike [4-5 hours] possibly less if shorter). 1-½ hike with nice views, river, little forest (no waterfall) – 25,000-c-1-2 people.

WILDLIFE REFUGE - Reptiles & Amphibians Refuge - REFUGIO HERPETOLOGICO http://RefugioHerpetologico.com / 2-282-4614 / http://Facebook.com/pages/Refugio-Herpetologico-de-Costa-Rica/138516509455?v=info&ref=nf / info@RefugioHerpetologico.com) - As of Jan. ’11, the West-side has it’s own Wildlife Refuge / Refugio Herpetologico – a Reptile & Amphibian Refuge helping save monkeys, macaws, snakes & more!! As much as possible, their intention is to return all animals to their natural environment (this is NOT a zoo). This is a WONDERFUL place to learn of the various animals (to help dispel many myths) – even getting to touch many! They provide Foster Care for nature and sustainable development. Generate scientific information. ANIMAL RESCUE – Do you see an animal in danger, being treated cruely, hurt? Call 8-828-0324 (open to ALL sorts of animals that arrive beaten, sick+).
