Casona 1 de Laly Restaurant - Escazu
La Casona de Laly

Located in a 200 year old pueblo home with a cool open, VERY tipico interior in Centro Escazu - the heart of the REAL part of Escazu!! I'm not a rice & beans (Tipico Tico) kinda gal BUT, I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! EVERYTHING I’ve had here was been REALLY TASTY!!!!!!
NOTE their prices under the new owners have gone up a LOT but it's still an EXCELLENT VALUE!!! 2 years ago the Casado was just 1,800 & now it's 2,500.
It is CONSISTENTLY HANDS DOWN THE BEST TICO RESTAURANT I’VE FOUND & BY FAR my FAV spot to go for Tipico Tico food as it’s GOOD & CHEAP with food like MY FAVS:
• CASADO's (fish, fried, grilled or fajitas chicken or beef or grilled pork chops with rice, beans, salad with avocado) = 2,500-c (drinks NOT included) - MY FAV - PESCADO•Fish la Plancha/grilled with LOTS of Ajo/garlic – YUMMMM!!!
• CEVICHE (2,600-c)
• MARGARITAS - They have the BEST MARGARITAS I've EVER had (made by ____ [the pretty black bartender] & my other business is in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico & I'm from Southern California hence I KNOW GOOD margaritas!!!), BUT they ain't cheap (I believe they're around 3,000-c/under $6).
• OLLA de CARNE - a BIG bowl of a stew made with some big chunks of beef & big chunks of potatoes, carrots, chayotes, plantains & other veggies (with a little cup of rice on the side). 4,300-c/around $8 but it's HUGE!!! (or get the small boca size•"Olita" for 2,000-c)
• Filet Mignon or Lomito en Salsa de Hongos•a Mushroom Gravy has ALWAYS been REALLY TENDER (& "tender" meat in CR isn't always easy to find - especially in an INexpensive place) = 5,700-c
• Yucca Frito•Fried Yucca (it's mushed up yucca [I LOVE IT with garlic powder which I need to bring]. I don't see it on the new menu but last time I was there, I asked & they had it).
BOCAS•APPETIZERS range from 1,900-3,600-c & some are smaller versions of regular meals at greatly reduced price!!
I’m not a big fan of their guacamole (I think they use the Tico avocados which don't have much taste to me).
One trip there where I was a bit "fiscally challenged", I treated a friend for her birthday (big spender me!!!) & she had one beer, I had a club soda, we split a YUMMMM ceviche, patagonias, I had the casado with chicken (rice, rice, beans, salad, platano!!) & she had the chile relleno PLUS they gave her a nice size piece of b'day cake!! $16!!!!!!!!!!!!
Note that it is one of the noisiest places I've been so you might want to sit in the area by the street which is quieter (or choose another place if you're wanting a conversation with whomever you're with!!)
This is a COOL place you can take the WHOLE family to watch soccer games & be amongst the locals (though it is NOT a sports bar!!). It's where I watched the last 3 World Cup matches in '14!
NOTE: The new owners REMOVED the caged birds!!!!
HOURS: Daily - 11am-11pm (their website says 12am/midnight but maybe the restaurant is only serving till 11pm??). Sun. 11am–9pm (their website says till 7pm). ONLY closed New Years Day (Jan. 1) & the Thurs. & Fri. before Easter.
LOCATION: Escazu (Centro)
Go directly up the hill at the Scotia Split. At the stop light veer to the Right. Go 2 blocks & it’s the terra cota corner restaurant on the Right. Or 200 meters north of the church/Musmani. Park on your Right just after the restaurant or on the street (remember to tip the car guard [most people I know tip a few hundred colones. You want to keep these people on YOUR side!!]).
