This beautiful building is on the site of the old international airport (till ’55 though a local airport till ’75) and houses some of Costa Rica’s finest art and is modern art in itself personified. If the 2nd floor is open during your visit (though it’s often mainly used when local dignities are hosting visiting dignitaries), check out the large “Gold”/Diplomatic/Conference Room's bas-relief walls which chronicle the history of Costa Rica from pre-Columbian times to the present with evocative images of its people. It’s a relatively small collection currently, but it includesworks from famous Costa Rican artists Jorge Jimenez Deredia, Max Jimenez, Jose Sancho and Francisco Zuñiga. Highlights - the Sculpture Garden’s out back & the beautiful outdoor setting.
