Negra (my name for her. Her real name is Princessa I found out the last few days I was there) was my #1 street buddy these past 6 weeks in Rivas, Nicaragua. She is THE SWEETEST baby!!! But she has the same STD tumor growing out of her vagina that Macha had & that killed her a couple months ago. I sunk quite a few $$s into her - first just feeding her 2-3 times a day & she wouldn't eat the crunchy dog food - so I'd have to mix it up with liver &/or give her rice of whatever leftovers I could find. Her front teeth are not much there & you can see by her teeth in the pics, she's got some gum stuff going on.
As I could come into a bit more $$ I would buy medicine for Parasites & Ticks (a BIG problem) & Fleas for the 10-20 street dogs I'd spend 2-4 hours a day feeding.
When it seemed the flea/tick medicine didn't help her (I found out later it wasn't the best/strongest choice but at first I didn't have $$$ to do them all) I took her to the vet to get shots for Parasites, Ticks/flees & vitamins but because of how she moved in the top shot - that got infected. So I took her to another vet to fix that up & get her the vaccinations a new dog would normally get & got her a bath because she had dried blood always in her backside that attracted flies which made her always trying to get them off.
I had no problem catching her to put her on the collar & leash & walking with me & 2 times I was in a Pipano (a bicycle taxi) - one time just stopping to say hi & she jumped right up on it & took a ride with me & she seemed to love it!! She's VERY GOOD & I think could be easy to train more.
I also paid to get her started on the chemo shots so lets see A) if the vet followed up on them & B) if it helped get rid of it. If not, when I get back I'll deal with the next step.
She NEEDS to get "fixed" but to do that she needs a Foster Home for a week & they're not big on doing that in Nicaragua - at least I didn't find anyone to do it - yet.
When I get back I will re-connect with a teacher from the Veterinarian School I met but lost his card till I got back to CR.
Oh, just days before I left, I found out she actually HAS a "family" - well, at least a home to sleep in at night - but evidently why I have a harder time finding dogs late at night to feed - MANY do - BUT - these people at least give them a place to sleep - but OFTEN turn them out onto the street the rest of the time to forage for themselves/find their own food & RARELY do they get them the vaccinations they need, vitamins, things for fleas/ticks or parasites & even rarer do they "fix"/spay/neuter them. With that said, I DO understand being that Nicaragua is the POOREST nation in the America's so they need to focus on feeding their families first.
When I go back in a few months I hope to raise some $$$ to do more for these precious fur babies - MANY in DESPERATE NEED - ESPECIALLY to get them "fixed" - especially after running all over town at 10:30pm one night TRYING to help a poor girl that was in heat that had 10 guys "having their way with her"/"going after her" (literally). It was SOOOOO SAD but they kept running & being 59-1/2 years YOUNG & a BIG girl - I had to give up after an hour (but I slept well that night after all that exercise)
