BORDER HOURS:
I've heard from people in Migracions•Immigracions - 6am-12am-midnight and I've heard other people say just till 8pm. I've also heard Monday-Saturday 6am-12am/midnight and Sunday - 6am-8pm. (do what ya want with this info - it's Costa Rica•Nicaragua!!)

THIS site is being updated and expanded on SOON

WHAT TENDS TO BE THE BEST/EASIEST DAYS TO MAKE THE BORDER CROSSING FASTER:
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Monday (in THIS order)

BUSIEST DAYS OF THE WEEK (HENCE LONGER LINES FOR THE BORDER CROSSING):
This of course can vary, ESPECIALLY if a bunch of buses are arriving at the same time, as you can be waiting for HOURS in lines (especially the buses that go directly through each country as you have to wait till EVERY PERSON on the bus has cleared customs!!) but the BUSIEST DAYS (based on what I've heard from numerous people in Immigration at the border) seem to be
Friday, Sunday and Saturday PLUS the day(s) before/after a holiday. Also, around Paydays - especially around a weekend - can be busy which for many are the 15th and 30th or 1st (some Nicaraguans may be bringing money back).

WORST WORST WORST DAYS/TIMES TO CROSS THE BOARDER IF YOU WANT TO AVOID THE 3-5 HOUR LONG LINES?? YOU MIGHT WANT TO AVOID ANY DAYS BEFORE/AROUND THE FOLLOWING HOLIDAYS (especially those weekends):
• 2017 - I don't have the official dates but Jan. 1 is a Sunday & sense that's not a big working day - I'm guessing most people will have that week off as their 2nd week - You'll still get residual from people coming back from Christmas/New Years usually till the Monday/Tues. after New Years (which NY in '12 is on Sunday!)
• May 1 - Labor Day in Costa Rica (celebrated ON that day only in CR) and Nicaragua
• ***WARNING!!!*** There are 2 times a year where you do NOT want to do a border crossing if you REALLY do not NEED to!! One is "Samana Santa (to us known as Easter Week). In 2017 that would be starting April 7 - when a HUGE percent of Nicaraguans living in Costa Rica will head home to celebrate with their families (OFTEN going to the beach so if you don't want to pay triple the price for accommodations & stand in LONG lines for anything [hence service won't be so great as might be the case for quality], have LOTS of fireworks going off at ALL hours & music & partying till ALL hours of the night & morning. A large percent of the workers will be off work from the Friday over a week before Easter Sunday (April 7) - till that Saturday or Sunday of Easter (April 15 and 16). Lines for Border Crossing could EASILY be 4-6 hours in the HEAT of one of the hottest months of the year!! There may be a key swamped days where they're open 24 hours (vs closing at midnight) - BUT the HIGHEST of HOLY DAYS - April 13 and 14 - Holy Thursday and Good Friday (MUCH more celebrated than even Easter BUT - NOTE that in some “provinces”/states it is a “DRY” [meaning NO alcohol can be “SOLD”
MANY things not near beach areas are closed [this is the case in Costa Rica. Is it "Dry" in NI also???) where the border has limited hours.
Easter in '17 is April 16.
• May 30 - Mother's Day for Nicaragua
• July 18 - It’s Anexio Guanacaste Day - Costa Rica (when this area ____ from Nicaragua and became part of Nicaragua)
• August 2 - Lady of our Angel’s Day - Costa Rica (note this is a day where HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of people WALK for MILES and MILES [some even come from Nicaragua] to Cartago so you’ll see people walking or riding horses along the highways. I mention this for those needing to get into the San Jose, CR area as buses can be hard to get and the roads can be hard and dangerous to pass as they go through San Jose.
• August 15 - Mother’s Day - Costa Rica
• Sept. 14 and 15 - Independence Day (the 15th is the "official" day but the celebrations starts the day before) - BOTH Nicaragua and Costa Rica
• October 12 - Dia del Encuentro de las Culturas (aka Columbus Day) - Costa Rica
• Christmas•New Years - Dec. 25 - BUT, people will start crossing the border as early as Dec. 16 (after workers get their "aguinaldo"/extra months pay they get) when much of the Costa Rican government and things close down. MANY people get 2 weeks vacation during this time) till around the Mon.-Tues. after New Years. In '12, Christmas Day falls on a Tuesday so things will closed most likely the Thurs. before (Dec. 20) hence Border Crossings can EASILY be 3-5+++ hours during this time. I've heard during that second half of December the border crossing can go from 1,000 people a day up to 8,000 a day with about 150,000 mainly Nicaraguans having left Costa Rica to spend the holidays with their families in Nicaragua.
(this is what I've derived from what I’ve experienced and MANY have shared)
Note that the Costa Rica holidays effect the crossing because there are SOOO MANY Nicaraguans living and working in Costa Rica and any excuse to go home (like a long weekend) is great - so try not to follow their travel flow or you’ll most likely have LONG lines!!)

NICARAGUA - Nicaragua OFTEN extends holidays if the real holiday is on a weekend day - or sometimes just on a Friday or Monday it seems like. Check out this site for some more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Nicaragua †http://qppstudio.net/publicholidays2014/nicaragua.htm

BUSES:
Bus times tend to often change at the start or end of a Peak Season and during Peak Holiday periods like Christmas/New Years and Samana Sante•Easter but don't trust my blurb 100% or even the bus companies website or facebook page (they are OFTEN out of date) - CALL to get updated (with that said - MANY TIMES I've called only to have received 2-4 DIFFERENT answers & one time ALL of them were INCORRECT & even the slip of paper I got at the bus station was different on my return!!! Ahhh - life in "paradise" eh?!?!). Check the bus info at:

BORDER CROSSING - PENAS BLANCA-COSTA RICA - LIBERIA BUS
GRUPO TRANBASA - Ruta 521
https://facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.977781918979485
SCHEDULE:
BOTH DIRECTIONS - Departs every 45 minutes from 5am-6:30pm & takes 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
THOUGH - sometimes they add extra buses so the service can change to every 30 minutes between 9:30am-3:30pm (mainly from Monday-Friday).
PLUS - Monday-Friday there is a bus from the border at 7:30pm (& they're testing out a daily bus leaving Liberia at 4am so you can be at the border when it opens at 6am [Border Crossing hours are daily 6am-12am-midnight]).
http://GrupoTranbasa.com/uploads/horarios_liberianos.pdf

PRICE:
1,610 colones•$3 (as of April 1, 2016)
U.S. $s ARE accepted BUT try to have nothing larger than a $20 (note your change WILL come back to you in CR colones & it will probably be at 500-c to $1 vs the better for you rate - for the ease of the driver).

TICKET OFFICE:
BORDER-PENAS BLANCAS - As you come out of Costa Rica’s Migracion buildig (after you’ve gone through the scanner) it’s directly in front of you - to the LEFT of the Aduana•Customs office. HOURS: Monday-Saturday - 7am-4pm
(Sunday pay driver*)
LIBERIA - No ticket office - Stand in line & pay the driver as you get on*.

*NOTE - CRUCIAL!!! If you’re paying your fare to the driver, there are 2 polls you pass through that are a counter. So if you need change, give the driver the change & pass through & let him hand you the change from BEHIND him - NOT between those 2 polls - otherwise it messes up his count & chances are you’ll get yelled at in Spanish & if you don’t speak it well, you won’t understand &/or do what I did my first time - came back through it & went through AGAIN!! We ALL were SOOOO flustered!!!

STATION LOCATION:
Peñas Blancas - Exit CR's Migracion•Immigration (after you've had your luggage x-rayed) & it's directly in front of you.
Liberia - Terminal De Buses Municipal De Liberia (in front of the Central Market) - https://facebook.com/pages/Terminal-De-Buses-Municipal-De-Liberia/203793133114130.

ENTERING COSTA RICA FROM NICARAGUA:
Are you aware that CR REQUIRES you to have PROOF you're leaving CR within 90 days to ENTER?
HOW TO GET A TICKET: You can buy a ticket at the kiosks across from the Entering CR side of Migracion•Immigrations but note it will be an Open-Ended Ticket which means it's good for up to 365 days(ish) - vs one with a DATE on it. The importance of this comment is

but even though I prefer to take TransNica often (especially their Ejecutivo bus that's faster, LOTS less time at the border crossing & you get a small casado/lunch for just $10 more - leaves CR at 12pm or Managua at 1pm) - for my Exit Ticket proof - to give me more EASE - I get the Tica Bus ticket because you can change the date easily on an online chat during the week or via email. Just print up the email they give you & bring that as SOMETIMES they get testy if you have scratched out dates & might give you a shorter entrance stamp (though that's not really that important for y'all).
For DETAILS (in English) on how to purchase a ticket online check out my blurb at:
http://LivingLifeInCostaRica.blogspot.com/2014/05/BuyTicaBusTicketOnlineProceedure.html

CHEAP BORDER CROSSING:
Contrary to what MANY say - You do NOT need to be wealthy to do Visa Runs. & it CAN be WAY cheaper than 1 months CAJA for your average Temporary Resident - of course depending on how you travel!!
The CHEAP CHEAP CHEAPEST WAY (I've done it sometimes):
• BUS - Deldu bus (no bathroom or AC - San Jose to the Nicaragua border at Penas Blancas) = $9
• CR LAND EXIT TAX you pay as you LEAVE CR = $8 (whomever does it for you charges $1-$2 Convenience Fee. Can be paid at the Deldu bus station on the CR side AT the border [I'm not sure about if you can pay it at the bus station in CR. Anyone done it lately?])
• ENTER NICARAGUA - $12 + $1 = $13
• EXIT NICARAGUA = $2 + $1 = $3
• ENTER CR - Proof you're leaving CR within 90 days (do NOT NOT NOT get an "Open-Ended Ticket" as that is proof you're leaving within 365 days & SOME [RARELY] people that get less than a 90 day stamp OFTEN are traveling with an Open-Ended ticket) = $28
• BUS - Deldu bus (no bathroom or AC - San Jose to the Nicaragua border at Penas Blancas) = $9 =
$70/each Trip. TOTAL!!! x 4/year = $280 a year.

If you're staying over then here's a CHEAP OPTION:
• BUS from Nicaragua to Rivas = $1 (or if you're lucky you can get a Colectivo taxi for $5)
• I stay at a VERY BASIC Hospedaje in Rivas that's a private room, fan, shared bathroom & shared kitchen, WiFi (downstairs room or in lobby), behind the church & 1 block East of the park - ULTRA CONVENIENT place = $6/per person per night (or $6 if it's just me) - Hospedaje Hilmor
• Or if I go to San Juan del Sur - a bus there from Rivas is $1ish but you can take a Co-operativo taxi for $2 per person each way
& I stay at Rebecca's Inn 2-1/2 blocks from the bay, private room, fan, shared bathroom, shared kitchen, VERY clean, WiFi = $15/n/1

With a shared kitchen I can bring some of my own food or go to the central mercado's & shop there, or in SJDS there are MEGA CHEAP soda's in the Market for $3 for a big what we'd call Casado!!!!
